Good I guess
I like the art, i like the characters, i like the gameplay. Its a bit short though and the ending was kind of weird and too easy.

Turns out EGA version is not included
So, I finally got to run this. My expectation was that the EGA version is included because in the case of many Sierra games, it was. But it's not. It's an SVGA repaint / "remake". I prefer to play the original game because re-makes usually are done in a way that cannot possibly deliver the original intention. In fact the very first scene of Loom is an example of this - the sunset is so bright that it takes the attention away from the red leaf which is a central point of interest in the old game. The second reason is that I like retro minimalism. It's my mistake to go into this with the wrong expectations but they were reinforced by other purchases on GoG so they are not unreasonable. But it's too late to refund.

Chances are you'll feel disappointed
I first played Loom recently, about a million years after it came out; so I can't say how great it may have seemed at the time. I certainly am not holding its pixel graphics against it - they're perfectly adequate (great even!) for the period, and you really should know what you are getting into; I deducted no points for that. There are other serious shortcomings though, which keep the game well away from being great IMHO. First, it's objectively short. Way too short for epic adventure, and frankly it isn't even seem to be trying - I played many games form the same period that very much DID have that epic vibe, while Loom just seems to be doing... some sort of "discount epic". Yeah, sure, "the world is at stake, do your best, are you done yet? Fine, let's wrap..." The endpoints are mostly fixed in these setups, it's the journey that matters - and the journey is WAY too short. You never really end up bonding to or caring about any of the characters all that much, including the protagonist. Yes, guess what, that would take a bunch more time and possibly even some character development... Second, I feel that the much praised and indeed novel "no inventory, just musical spells" game mechanics, as interesting as they are, are more of a gimmick than an actual improvement over the traditional point-and-click mechanics. They are a sort of "look ma, no hands" tour de force but end up hurting the quality of the (typically not too hard) puzzles, severely limiting what can be done in that space. It sure doesn't help that the story is as linear as a piece of taut string, and not even particularly engaging - of COURSE you have to, well, keep moving along to wherever you're headed, but one typically expects a bit more twists and turns as things keep changing - well no they don't really do that here. And let me note without spoiling much that the ending is very far from feeling satisfactory. This is NOT how you end a quest of this type. NOT EVEN if you're planning a sequel...
