As the title of my review says, at least for me, It would be difficult to find another game so well developed these days. It is full of love for the genre, various, deep and let me say that if you want to jump into the world of editing and developing levels and assets, this is the best chance to start. The editor is amazing and lets you do practically everithing (once you dig in it enough time and study a little of Lua). Anyway, if you want only play, just take it, because it is a masterpiece. Still hoping for Grimrock 3 devs...
Just finished this game and found it overall rewarding and enjoyable. I like dungeon crawlers and this is a deliberately old fashioned game, largely expanding on the experience of Legend of Grimrock, the original. However there were a few issues that stopped it from reaching the five star rating.
Some of the puzzles are very tricky to even determine what is happening. There are often clues but if you miss these it can be annoying.
You end up with a lot of clutter in your inventory and with no trading element you can carry as much as you can, or do what I did and dump a load of excess items. However it turned out I dumped an essential item and had to try and find it again - very frustrating.
The last comment is that there is a lot of open play in the game, its far less linear than Legend of Grimrock, but this in itself causes some confusion. I got lost looking at one stage trying to figure what was next only to eventually realise I had to go back to go forward - maybe it was just me but seemed to be confusing.
Now, I really enjoyed the game, good puzzles generally, not too hard and a good mix of characters, fighting and magic.
Having a great time with this. The story gets out of the way fairly quickly and you're just given free reign to explore an island with satisfyingly varied environments and interesting puzzles. The combat is quite tough, even on normal difficulty, but in my opinion this is essential because it makes levelling up and finding gear satisfying. The non-linear progression also means that you can just come back once your team is stronger.
Love the way the real-time combat works. Combination of coordination and having to think on your feet. Enjoying this more than Grimrock 1 (which, due to its linear layout, had me constantly anxious about leaving things behind and the potentially very dull backtracking I would have to do if I solved a puzzle in my head later on, or realised I needed an item I'd dropped)
You will be punished for not knowing things before you started. The combat is straightforward at first, and then it becomes near impossible without being able to exploit movement around corners. The first game is very similar.
Game isn't cruel - it just doesn't care. If screw sth, you're screwed.
After first look at the game, I thought that it is a junky game, but after I started playing I soaked in it.
Gameplay is based on leading player from puzzle to puzzle - after solving one, you jump into another one. And so on, and so on... So, player is constantly craving for next dopamine release. This is what makes this game addictive.
Game is very oldschool in nature, and does not provide you with many conveniences. Well, you have map where you can make notes. That's it. But this crudeness is what makes this game great. You are alone on an unknown island - deal with it.
First thing you can screw is making not working group - yeah, that would suck. For instance: not taking an alchemist is propably making game a lot, lot harder. But if know sth about making rpg teams you should work it out fine. Generally, be versatile.
Fights - meh... mostly boring by themselves, but are breaking monotony for a bit. (At the beginning moving on a grid is strange. Fight are mostly dodging around the grid.)
Story - well... there is some. But not really.
Graphics are nice. Sounds are ok, too. - both not great, just doing their job well.
Still, recommend it, if you are oldschool player - if you play games since 2014 or sth, you won't like it (propably).
