Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos takes you on an adventure: save the dying king and stop the evil sorceress Scotia’s Dark Army. Your band of heroes will travel through a vast fantasy word full of mysterious places, dangerous monsters, and hidden treasures in a quest to find a way to defeat the immortal evil enchantress and save the world.
In Lands of Lore: Guardians of Destiny you enter a world of intense beauty and mortal danger where your slightest move can trigger cataclysmic events, miraculous escapes, or lethal battles. See magical cities rise out of great oceans. Enter the musty caverns of Dracoid ruins. Discover gruesome altars and witness secret ceremonies never before seen by humans.
Lands of Lore 1+2 is a solid piece of cRPG history. It was a time of transition from 2D to 3D, from floppy disks to CDs. New technologies allowed things like live actors in 3D environment, full voice-overs, good sound quality, and CGI sequences. All this was used in Lands of Lore 2 to create vast, rich world that is anything but boring or ordinary.
Lovely game, but take care - if you already have fighting level 10, the game hangs up when trying to increase your fighting level by one of you choose to side with the Xeobs.
Purchased these recently after rediscovering that old demo advert on C&C Red Alert.
I didn't finish LoL1. It is definitely a well made game, I just found the level design frustrating (spinning tiles, respawning enemies and fake walls). I might go back to it someday.
I've never played anything like LoL2. The cheesy fmv character interactions set in a rich dark fantasy setting is refreshing. Low resolution but the textures are really nice and the digital soundtrack is top tier. Midi soundtrack sounds great too. The controls take a bit to feel out but once the keybindings are set and learned they feel good. The devs created something very special with this old unique game.
I played the first game years ago - it was a classic and showed Westwood really knew how to make an RPG.
There was one problem that ended my game for me and sadly I never went back to it - eventually you run into these stone faces and each of which wants a particular item in order to let you pass. One of them wanted a healing herb, but I didn't have any and hadn't seen any recently. By that point in the game I had other healing options so I'd been ignoring any that I did see.
Still, it's worth replaying.
The characters, music and world are very charming and each dungeon completely changes the environment and enemies so it doesn’t get too repetitive
The enemies aren't overly difficult, the puzzles aren't asinine and it has nice QOL stuff like automapping and unlimited rests. It would be a good place to start for someone who's new to dungeon crawlers, if your not a newbie you might find it a bit basic.
Don’t expect anything too deep, the story is pretty simple and it would be a stretch to call it an RPG given its simple levelling system/equipment.
Tip – Level your rogue skill: the last dungeon requires you have at least level 4 rogue, without that you cant finish the game
Superb game and story telling. For the sale price it's a ridiculously good deal and a must have. Do yourself a favor and pick this up if you haven't already, it's really just that good.
