HuniePop is a unique sim experience for PC, Mac and Linux. It's a gameplay first approach that's part dating sim, part puzzle game, with light RPG elements, a visual novel style of presentation, an abrasive western writing style and plenty of "plot".
8 gorgeous girls each with their own personalities, preferences and style. (Rumor has it there are several secret characters to unlock as well!)
Hundreds of collectables including gifts, outfits and photos that you can purchase, unlock or earn as special rewards.
An addicting match-3 style puzzle dating system with it's own unique twists including upgradeable traits/stats, the ability to move any number of positions and special date gifts that have a variety of interesting effects on the puzzle.
A very fun game, to my knowledge this is the first game of this puzzle genre I've played and it didn't disappoint.
Of course the game isn't for children, erm hello, the premise of it basically is about as far away from a kid friendly plot you can get unless I missed the point where family morals took a step back. That being said Disney and Pixar have been putting in some subtle references but I digress.
This is a fun game and I urge you to play it and if you do I say GO FOR NIKKI SHE'S ONE OF US.
It's a "dating sim". Air quotes are fun, but a more salacious gesture might be appropriate here.
The player is a sad and lonely loser who can't get a date, playing a game in which the main character is a sad and lonely loser who can't get a date - until a magical love fairy appears to help him out. (Or help her out - you can play as a woman because all the girls are bisexual.)
It turns out that the secret to success with women is playing a match-3 game, and this part is addictive and very well done, with a lot of extra stuff bolted on to the core match-3 gameplay to keep it interesting. The other half of the game is stalking the girls, talking to them, buying them gifts, getting them drunk , and feeding them insane amounts of food. No, really. Want to ask a question? That will cost you a burger. Don't ask me why taking a girl home for the night fills up half her nutrition bar.
With the Valentine's Day update, things got a lot harder. Also, the difficulty of the game increased with the introduction of the "alpha" game mode in which dates get more difficult without limit. Players who enjoy grinding will appreciate this, as will players who like to get 100% completion.
Writing tends to be offensive, hilarious, or both, with the best/worst lines by far being... everything Kyu says. Voice acting is pretty good, although some people disagree here. The girls' voices can be turned off - how are real women expected to compete with such perfect fantasy creatures?
Control is via mouse only, which gets the job done, but a few keyboard shortcuts would have been nice. I can only speculate about what I'm expected to do with my spare hand while playing this.
It's fun and funny. It is not for the perpetually offended, or for people who have some sort of religious objection (e.g. Leviticus 18:17), and really not for kids. For the rest of us, thumbs up!
I'm more or less done my first run through HuniePop, and GOG is telling me that I've managed to spend 12 hours already. Twelve hours in a dating simulator, using match-3 mechanics to date cartoon women and memorizing details about characters whom I could never meet in real life. That just goes to show that, despite the rather simple premise, the game hooks you and doesn't let go. The dialogue is funny, the various characters are -- with one big exception -- likable and relatable, and the match-3 gameplay has a deceptive depth that will keep you focused on your every move. I definitely recommend playing this game. It's well worth the price.
I can say that I like this game. And that's only partly because of the fanservice. On hardest difficulty its more like a strategy-match-3 that rewards you with nice pictures. So should you buy it? absolutely! its a great game even if I wouldnt play it while my parents can see the screen.
