Could not understand all the hype.

Having never played Might and Magic but having many years of game play and a great love of RPG, I was willing to give this a try. I was all excited after reading the grand reviews and thought it was a good bet. I was very disappointed and could not even get past the first battle scenes. I found it very non intuitive and was not even liking the character that I supposed to be. For the price I guess I cant complain but I will not be playing this game. I really cant see what others see that is so good about this game. Really wanted to like it.

Works with Linux and Fan-Patch 5.5

I played the HoMM Series from the beginning and switched to Linux lately. Just open the gog-installer with wine and it installs like a charm. Patch it with Fan-Patch 5.5 and enjoy one of the best HoMM Titles :)

best buy

I played all of HOMM games from 3 to 7 and all I can say about them is that i played number 5 most of the time. Number 3 i played like once all other serials also only once but HOMM V i played for years and still playing sometimes when i find time for it. Incredible game, awesome gameplay, extraordinary story. I will never forgive them for not finishing raelag and queen Isabela story-line. So we are yet to see HOMM V sequel I hope. Great game.

Extra star for price and DRM-free

I like the changes made in H5. Neutral creatures now have ZoC to items around it. You can't dodge a battle by grabbing treasure from opposite side anymore. The second set of creature upgrade is great and expand the strategy a lot. Choice could depend on what artifacts you've acquired. Bow artifact which give no range penalty, for example, would likely push you to choose the elves archers with warding instead of the other option that give you no range penalty which already given by the bow artifact. All the heroes type pushes you to play differently. Although, IMO, the avenger skillset for Elves is quite useless compared to the runemage. The game tend to crash if I try to reload a game on impossible size map.

Bring on the controversy!

I reckon that this is better than HomM 3. Make no mistake, I am old as the dirt and have played every HoMM game since the original (or arguably further back - King's Bounty on the C64)! However, whilst I played HoMM 3 to death with 2 close friends when we had tons of time on our hands (which means that I will always favour that game), I reckon that HoMM V is actually a better game. Let me explain. The graphics and sound are SO amazing in this version it means that you're playing a AAA title ... but it's a HoMM game! That's just a nice to have, but it does make a difference. My friends and I used to change the MP3 track for our respective towns in HoMM 3 so that we would have the latest tunes playing, which was actually a shame given how awesome the music is. Secondly, the ability for the hero to actually use might or magic in combat makes for a much better combat and ranking system. Thirdly, spells are way more epic and combat feels tense and much more epic. The combination of spells that can be used and the way that it is very well displayed on the battlefield is a massive leap forward from HoMM 3. Finally, the creature factions (with the expansions) really do mean that you get some amazing creatures with extremely interesting abilities.
