The Best Worst Game I Hate to Love
It’s cheesy, ugly, unbalanced—everything you’d normally hate in a game, yet I can't help but love it. Graphics & Music At launch, HoMM IV was visually stunning, comparable to Diablo 2, while still running on modest hardware. But the real masterpiece? The soundtrack—arguably the greatest OST in gaming history. A brilliant mix of opera and classical instrumentals that no game has surpassed. Gameplay & Balance Frustratingly unbalanced. Campaigns are brutal, even on "Novice" difficulty. The AI has absurd advantages—it knows all paths, never loses troops, and steamrolls you while you're still exploring. If you play without cheats, good luck making progress. Single scenarios? Much better. They're playable and deliver epic battles, but lack deep story engagement. The lore is fantastic, but how can you enjoy it when the campaigns are borderline unplayable? This haunts me to this day. Final Verdict This is one of my biggest rage-quit games ever. I just quit again after getting obliterated on turn 5 by three AI heroes, each with 100+ troops, while I barely had 30. How do they do it? Who knows. But they’re unstoppable. Score: 5/10 (or 3/5 on GOG). Sounds negative, yet I highly recommend it—it’s a flawed masterpiece. There are mods that supposedly fix the balance, which I plan to try soon. Give it a shot and experience this unforgiving, yet mesmerizing fantasy world.
