Hard West

Good turn-based strategy, but it could have been much better. It is a western game with.. hmm religious.. supernatural twists. Finishing the game took me little over 22 hours, so with this price that's good value. Graphics are fine, music is ok, but story could have been better. In my opinion they should have just made a western game without the supernatural. Battles can be hard or easy, depending on what weapons and cards your characters have. The character "poker hands" is a nice feature where you can give extra abilities to your characters. You can save or load your game only on checkpoints and that can be frustrating as hell. Shutdown the game at a wrong time and you will have play it again from the last checkpoint. Also if something goes wrong in battles you only have the option to restart the battle; which sucks and at some point you just don't care anymore, if some of your side characters die. Game occasionally hangs for about a minute when visiting trader or just looking at your inventory, but usually it recovers from it. It's not the best game there is, but it is certainly worth a playthrough.

Turn-based Western/Horror Shoot 'em Up

Hard West is a fun indie that combines Western themes with horror elements, like undead and the like. You'll have characters with supernatural powers versus those who are really good snipers, stealthy, etc. It's a unique setting that I enjoyed. The core of the game involves a series of scenarios that can last quite a bit of time (30+ minutes) and if you lose, you get to start over. You must carefully move around, try not to get cornered, and plan your shots. You can customize weapons, add-ons, and other things to help you, but healing is limited. Sometimes you can miss a crucial shot and pay dearly for it, and other times you land a long distance hit for a one-shot kill. It's the kind of game that rewards the player for being patient. Rush in, and you'll never complete a mission.

Few of this era

There are very few turn-based wild west strategy games, this one is very well done, akin to the style of XCOM. I deducted a star because the grand-strategy map tasks are more of an annoyance than a challenge although there is good narration throughout,

I really put some hours into this game but overall I can't really say that I like it. I like the overall style, atmosphere and even the gameplay. I like how much weight there is behind the shots hitting, I like the analytic, tactical style of the fights. But there are many small problems. I don't want to describe them all and just mention my biggest issue: The reverse difficulty curve. It's present all along the game and - in my opinion - ruins it completely. The first mission of each chapter is always the hardest, because you lack decent weapons and usually have the fewest characters. Even the first mission in the game can be quite challenging. It requires careful planning and progressing slowly. After that, you level up your characters, buy better weapons, get additional men - and suddenly you're shooting fish in a barrel. Suddenly it's not that much of a problem anymore if you are ambushed, suddenly you can manage open shootouts with several enemies. Suddenly you are just combing through the maps to find all the bad guys you have to shoot. And this repeats every time: Challenging first mission and declining difficulty after that.

Hard to love

This review is regarding Linux version on Kubuntu 22.04. TL;DR this game is broken. If you must buy and play it, enable quick save and use it, and also make regular backups of your save game at /home(/user)/documents/HardWest. This game also toasts your GPU for some inexplicable reason. The game itself would be awesome if it worked as it should. However, it seems that devs abandoned this project and moved on to making more presumably equally unstable games. I had to start this game 3 times over because of corrupted save games: for example some GUI items(such as the one that shows currently equipped weapon and its ammo) suddenly would suddenly missing and never come back. Little known feature that was added in final patch is "quick save" which doesn't work like regular auto save, but instead creates a snapshot of the game at that point. With a combination of quick saves and backing up my save game at /home(/user)/documents/HardWest I believe I will be able to actually finish this game.
