I received GUN as a gift in the good ol' regular Xbox days (before the 360 was a thing). Ever since then, I go back and play it every year or so - but now on PC.
Your character, Ned, is out with his father, just doing their normal thing, when the arrival of steamboat and the subsequent events leave Ned's world turned upside-down. Ned is left with more questions than answers, and a hefty desire for revenge.
GUN is in the same realm of GTA-styled games, but with a Western theme applied to it. You may roam around and do various side missions before completing the main storyline. These include Indian hunting missions, Texas Hold 'Em mini-tournaments, Pony Express missions (like timed racing missions, only with angry Indians and bandits), bounty hunter missions (usually worth more alive than dead), and the like.
The combat system is real time, though Ned does have a "quick draw" ability that temporarily slows down time (or perhaps just makes him much quicker). There are pistols, rifles, bladed weapons, explosives, and so on, most (if not all) of which can be upgraded. While the game is also open world, you'll probably do most of your moving and exploring on a horse, unless you prefer walking.
It's a solid game, with unique missions, and an interesting plot. The gameplay still feels good. Anyone who hasn't played this game yet needs to give it a shot (pun intended).
Note: considering the age and lack of HD graphics, I wouldn't pay much more than 5 or 6 bucks for the game.
It's impossible to ignore how much Rockstar's open-world western masterpiece owes to this game, arguably more than its own official predecessor. You've got the wide open plains for horse riding, mission structure inspired by GTA and cinematic cutscenes not afraid to get dramatic, but still keeping a delightfully pulpy tone. The music and voice acting are top notch. Unfortunately, it didn't age all that well.
If this was 2005, I'd wholeheartedly recommend the game as the best Wild West shooter there is. But it's not 2005 and GUN has since been overshadowed by Call of Juarez and Red Dead Redemption, which have surpassed it in pretty much every way. The sad truth is that once you've played Rockstar's cowboy simulator, there's very little this game can offer, be it in terms of world design, gameplay, storytelling, activities or atmosphere. And even if you haven't, you have to take into account the dated aspects of the game.
This was before open-world games got solid gunplay, lively worlds and cool side quests. That's not to say GUN does these things especially badly. They're ok, serviceable, but not much more. They lack polish and depth expected from newer titles, which can make them feel dull after a while. The map especially could've been filled with more detail and interactive locations. However, these problems never become really annoying, since the game is fairly short for an open-world title.
GUN seems like a missed potential. It's still a fun game and you can definitely enjoy it for the story, but it lacks features and complexity that would make it a great game. Its biggest strength at the time was the unique setting, but these days it looks more like a stepping stone for bigger and better Wild West games.
Possibly the greatest cowboy game along with Red Dead Redemption. It is kind of like GTA style, some of the side quests are extremely tedious, the only flaw I'd say it has is how absolutely different the last boss is from everything else. The last boss almost ruins the game but even if you don't defeat him and finish it it is still a 4/5 game, great one.
