If you liked Dragon Age or MassEffect where you gotta develope reputation with different characetrs and sides, this one is for you. And you got to pay attention to what dialog and when you choose them.
Also I loved that instead of fantasy or steam punk setting they went with colonial/17th century setting. I got tired of knights and elves at this point, and this one is much needed fresh air.
Downsides is mostly some glitchies here and there. Camera can be your worse enemy in the game. And some lack of armor and spells is present. Still solid RPG.
I watched quite a long gameplay on Youtube and the reviewer advised the game gives a Gothic-like feeling. Due to the fact, I am a fan of Gothic 1, 2 and a little bit of 3, I really neded to try it out. Unfortunately, I found out, there's little to confirm about it.
The most tiring thing in the game is the constant running around cities and instances. No, I have nothing againg exploring game worlds, but it really needs to be an open world so that it makes it pleasant. In the case of Greedfall, exploring is taking place in a rather limited world full of repetitions and dead ends. Another thing is that, the locations, especially buildings, seem to be quite empty, characters are just standing and watching one spot like in Morrowind which of course, offered much more pros in return. And I won't even mention music in the residences, which is probably the wrost I've heard in my gaming life.
The fighting system is ok, however, not natural and quite chaotic at some point.
I would also criticize the inventory panel, as I found it quite difficult to catch up on what I have and what is better to what I'm weraing at the moment.
The dialogs are quite stiffy and not gripping at all. Sometimes I cought myself on reaching my phone in the middle of some longer conversations.
The game started to be a little bit painful from the very beginning for me but still gave it 17 hours to go. At the moment, I am done but maybe I'll give it another chance in the future.
To sum up, personally I would not recommend the game, however, I am conscious about the fact that there are people for whom the negative features above may not be that relevant or even considered advantages.
It's not perfect and could definitely be polished more, but the game is playable. It's a very interesting world with some good companions and side missions. The main story is also fun to. Really glad I was able to play this game, it wasn't on my radar but I'm happy it ended up there.
I am not saying this game is bad, so bear with me on this one. Greedfall sits somewhere between Mass Effect, Dragon Age 2 and Witcher 2, being closest to the latter in my opinion. It has an original and well-built world, good theme I feel is underused in games, interesting story with high point in the middle of it, good voiceacting, decent graphics and medium music. It has teambuilding elements, which I usually adore, but here they feel a little bit artificial. I wouldn't call this game bad in any aspect, but it isn't great in any either.
This game consists of 80% running, 17% talking and 3% combat. Of those, talking is very good, combat is mediocre (as a spellcaster at least) and running is unbearable when you don't realise you can use the closest globe/campfire to insta-travel instead of following the quest marker. I played this game at 1440p ultra and it wasn't pretty. Facial expressions are particularly weak, breaking the immersion a little during dialogues. Cities are unpopulated and overall feel empty and buildings have exactly the same layouts. It's a low - budget production, and it shows.
Overall, I like that kind of games where talking takes the center spot. I am rating it 7/10: it's a good, old-school RPG with lower budget than you might be used to. If you already finished Witcher 3 with DLC's - go ahead and try this one.
Decent game and way better than the last Spiders game I played, Bound by Flame, which was pretty abysmal. This game feels a lot like Dragon Age Inquisition but with a better combat system which reminds me of the Witcher 3. I think this one is worth 7/10, but I'm subtracting a point owing to the following somewhat janky features:
- Really dated facial animations (game should maybe have been called "Teethfall" instead?), though you tend to get used to them after a while.
- The game has a day/night cycle but NPCs just go about their routines 24 hours a day. Merchants will still bark at you to come and check out their wares when you run past their stalls in the dead of night, some townsfolk just stand around staring blankly and all the NPCs who walk around occasionally get stuck on obstacles which they continue walking against until you bump against them.
- No children to be seen anywhere, even in native villages, which ruins immersion somewhat.
- Copy/pasted interiors for all the major buildings, like the governors' mansions and the native chieftain huts. If this sort of thing really irritated you in Dragon Age 2, then I would recommend you avoid this game.
- Companions who repeat the same lines endlessly in combat.
- Ridiculous difficulty spikes for some boss battles.
- Lots of poorly designed, tedious fetch quests (eg the infamous Logging Camp one) which have you running back and forth repeatedly.
In summary, this is worth picking up on sale if you enjoy Bioware type RPGs, but don't expect the experience to be as polished. I think Spiders is a developer that comes up with some great ideas for their games, but tends to fall short in the quality department as they simply don't have the resources to compete with the bigger studios. Hopefully that may change in the future....
