good but still not playable!

I am a huge fan of the Gothic Saga and i have played this title when it was released. Since then i haven't really tried it again and i began to wonder why. So, i bought it here, updated it with the most important stuff (espacially the community has done really awesome stuff here!!!) and used additional tools to optimize the performance (bugfixing, ram-optimization, etc.). After 30 hours of nostalgic feelings and a handfull of crashes (Where ist the Guru Bug!) i managed to get to Nordmar, where the game just crashed permanently. I googled a long time and tried a lot of stuff here, but in the end this game is unplayable on my system. And now i remember why i havent played it in such a long time: even then it was a really buggy thing to play but somehow i managed to get throug it on the lowest settings. Now, with a far better pc, i didn't made it. It's a shame for such a great game with such a great community support!

Pretty terrible so far

I was a huge fan of Gothic II, played ages with it. The first impression of Gothic III is not good. For one, it crashed three times in 3 hours. Then, the controls are just plain terrible. Almost impossible to turn into the direction you want while moving; hugely annoying. Also, the hero runs for ~2 seconds even after one stopped pushing the button. Finally, it seems to me the fighting mechanics are actually worse than in Gothic 2, one has pretty little control over what is happening, though clearly this is partly due to the terrible controls. So far, this is a majr disappointment.

Not so great.

It is an alright game, but it is buggy as anything without the community patch and the combat is not anywhere near as good as in Gothic 1+2. The game is also very unfinished, many of the side quests and extra things like smithing seem like they only just got added at the last minute to expand the game, because all of the rewards are inferior to things on the main questline. Might be worth checking out, but I'd suggest you play Risen instead.

Some recommendations for starters

After years and countless patches, this game is finally playable & enjoyable. Let me give you some infos (no spoilers) to make this an even better experience: 1. Install the Gothic 3 Community Patch 1.75 - not only many bug fixes, but also better performance, better graphics as well as more & new settings 2. Turn on Color Grading - the original colors are way too bright, turn this on for a true Gothic atmosphere 3. Turn off Alternative Balancing & Alternative K.I. of the CP 1.75 if you want an original playthrough, or google it and keep it on if you like it 4. If you want, and if you have a very (!) strong computer, you can push the graphics even further than the CP 1.75 standard max, google "pcgh ini" or "gothic 3 ini graphics" 5. In case you haven´t played the two first parts + addon already, I strongly suggest doing it, even though the graphics are a bit outdated, they´re still awesome games. Also there are probably texture packs and/or other ways to make the look better 6. There are a lot of loading stutters / micro stutters due to loading & bad coding. This can get annoying and is also the reason for me to give only 4 stars, maybe a SSD would help, I don´t personally own one 7. If you understand German, play it in German - yes, this is one of the few games one can actually enjoy in German, as it was produced there

Fantastic game

Sad thing it is not working anymore on the newer systems. Longest period without CTD (memory violation error) is about 1-2 min.
