Gothic

I'm reviewing this as someone totally new to Gothic, but who enjoys older RPGs and games from the era like Thief or Morrowind. The Good: * Some cool magic spells * Decent world-building * The visuals are well done for the time period * Voice acting (mostly) The bad: * No sense of discovery/exploration. No quests to find, no cool locations to discover, no unique hand-placed gear to loot. * Movement, combat and taking action in general is extremely clunky * Very tedious in some areas, like looting and traveling * Story is incredibly generic and boring, except maybe first 1/3rd * No interesting progression/ cool skills * Still a bit janky/broken even with the community patches currently available (Union + G1CP) This review was extremely cut-down in terms of explanations due to the character limit for reviews on this site. This is just a summary of the big points.

The absolute worst combat system I have ever had the displeasure to use. I have had this title now, for years. It taunts me - sitting there on the shelf. "Hey" it says "come play me" I simply whistle, go about my business, and pretend I never heard it. I do not care how good others have said the story is. How can one enjoy a title when they are so severely handicapped right out of the box? Now understand - I'm no stranger to difficult games. This title - takes pain in the azz - to a level that isn't healthy. To say the controls are "clunky" is being polite. REALLY polite. My advice? there are a A LOT of other older titles from this time and era, that, simply stated, put this to shame. I do, however, wish SOMEONE would do a solid remake. This all being said - spend your hard earned - elsewhere - even at 10 bucks It simply - isn't worth it. ~ SC ~

Why is the control scheme so ♥♥♥♥ing awful? Was the year 2001 just on drugs when some games were in development? The game works but it's unplayable due to VERY poor controls and lack of mouse support. And by lack of mouse support I mean you don't use the mouse buttons like in Gothic 3 or Risen to initiate an action. All you use is the keyboard which gets annoying the second you enter the game.

This game is literally unplayable, the controls are so bad that a proper fight isnt possible at all. If u want to pick up things you need to stop and press two different buttons at once and if you want to collect things from a chest, this is even more f*cked up because the normal "Action button" doesnt seem to work here, so those things remained in there. I could only collect them after pressing some random buttons on my keyboard. Another point is that theres no way to play this game with a gamepad which would improve the UI DRASTICALLY. I know this game is very old so I didnt see any reason to complain about the graphics but with those graphics the game makes even less fun. For 10€ this game is WAAAAAAY too overpriced, I got other games here for the same price with much better graphics and controling. The game wouldnt be that bad at all but these utterly bad controls just ruin the entire game if you have to do unnecessary complicated button combinations for almost every little action you do.

I am a youtuber who likes recording Lets Plays. I was planning on doing a Lets play on Gothic since there wasn't many english lets play of it. I wondered why that was. Then I Played It. OH GOD. The controls are a nightmare. When you go to options and look at the controls, it only tells you a quarter of them. The rest is unknown and up to the player to find out. So you keep slamming your head into the keyboard hoping that your character would pick up something or talk to someone. This is some of the most disasterous controls I have ever played in any game ever. I couldn't figure out anything. I had to go on the internet several times in order to find out what the controls actually were. It was such a terrible experience. But... I still want to give this series a chance. I will not be returning to play Gothic 1 anytime soon due to it's horrendous controls. If anyone can actually help me with the games controls please do. I am baffled of how people are able to play it. Hopefully, Gothic 2 3 and the Risen games by the same developer have a more accessible control scheme for players to ease into. The game has to be good and I believe the people who know what they are doing. I'm sure Gothic is a really enjoyable game once you get the controls down. But unfortunately, this gamer is skipping this to go to Gothic 2.
