Gothic

I love RPG's. They are my favorite games to play. I have played almost every type you can imagine. I enjoy them even if they are "bad". I just REALLY like them. Okay, I have read the reviews of Gothic here on GOG and decided that I must get it. The recent bundle deal they had left me with no choice. In anticipation I fire Gothic up. The initial starting conversation ends and I'm ready to play...or so I thought. The controls on this game are horrible! I live with a condition called neuropathy that has left my hands rather weak and this is the first game I've played that I simply cannot deal with. What were these guys thinking? I have read reviews from others saying that they have "gotten used" to the funky system, but I question giving that any credit. Controls in a game should flow easily to make a game enjoyable. These controls make no sense whatsoever. I give it two stars since I believe the game must have something to it to have so many people lavish praise upon it. I played it for two hours and all I had were numb wrists. Sorry. Installing Gothic 2 and hoping it is better.

Get ready for a save scum extraordinaire. If you have the patience to slog through the endless awful controls, game freezing bugs and inconceivably awful inventory screens, there is a chance at fun. The combat is at best ill-conceived. The story; basic. Though both of these don't entirely inhibit the exploration of an impressive world with a lot of personality and charm.

I debated much on whether to give this game 2 or 3 stars. I gave it 3 stars because there is a very fun and engrossing game to be played; only if you CAN play it. I'm sure you've seen lots of comments about the counter-intuitive controls. They are all true. The saddest thing about it is this game was released in 2001. By that time any self respecting programming team to make a first, or third person game, gave an option to change controls. This game does not. There is no tutorial. There is no progressive dialogue boxes that explain the control scheme as you begin your journey. There is no way to look in-game as to what the keys are assigned to. You must try to memorize things such as, to interact with any object press <ctrl>+up, except chests which take Mouse2+up to open then hold Mouse2 down as you riffle through the contents. I even read somewhere that the developers where not going to use the mouse at all, but threw it in last minute. For me it took about 1 1/2 hours to really get the hang of it. With all that said, there is a good game to be played if you stick with it.

I wanted to like it but the game just crashes at launch for me (Windows 10 Pro 64, 2080ti, i9). Sadly, these days I do not have much time to waste so will have to give up.
