Special

Every once in a while you find a game, that is one of a kind, special. Firewatch is one of those. It sets out to do few things, and does them very well. A "walking simulator" is a fair way of characterising the game, as you will spend the entire game hiking around the national park. Another focus is narrative and you will use RPG-like conversation system to shape the direction of your character. There are also quite a few items to interact with. Gameplay is simple, and the story is the focus. You don't have much influence on the story, and choices are there to help you get immersed into the story, rather than direct it. I found the story to be worth the addmission fee, but I would warn people who look for entertainment per say - it is more of a character drama, than an entertaining intrigue, even though there are some great tension building.

Got it on steam

Its not a game. You wander around for 2h and follow a story that doesnt really go anywhere. Its not terrible, its just really not worth the asking price. Oh and the developer is a massive twitter warrior / self rightious ass ("I shall now retroactively DMCA pewdiepie who played my game weeks ago, because i now dislike him as a person").

Beautiful but short narrative game

I have been thinking about buying Firewatch for a long time. It was said to be rather short and boring. I envisioned a simple walking simulator, just wandering through the woods watching out for wildfires. I was wrong! Firewatch has a quite linear but intense storyline with some unexpected surprises. Some parts even had the potential of being a little scary. Might depend on the person playing the game, of course. Besides, graphics and artwork are just beautifully made. The only thing I could complain about is that the game has a very low replay value. Nevertheless you should give it a try. It's worth it. Just don't expect an action paced game with a complex gameplay. It's focus is clearly on the narrative.

Overhyped, but still a good game.

I am so glad I finally got to play this game. I've been putting it off for a year now. I came into this game with very high expectations: the word on the street was that Firewatch is the god of all indie games. The visuals are certainly unique and memorable, but that is such a lously reason to play game, to me. I also expected the dialogue/storyline to be Pulitzer worthy material, but it was just kind of just this airy, melancholic, "how sad and depressing can we make this game, while sounding like there is a deep philosophical message?" It was very hard for me to sympathize with the protagonist because *spoiler* he didn't treat wife very well and was a drunkard. I understand that not all protagonists are knights in shinig armor, but the characters that are flawed usually have a redemptive arch or epiphany: the ending to game was lackluster to what could have been an amazing ending. I just could not identify with a drunkard who bottled up his emotions and ran away from his problems. What else was off putting to me, was that one of the options in the game was to develop an affair with your boss... while your wife is dying half-way across the world. That's gonna be a no from me, dog. However, there were many shining moments in the game. I did not expect the mystery/thriller element at all. The suspense really kept me at the edge of my seat wondering how all the clues will tie togather. Though this game didn't live up to the hype, it is still worth a playthrough: especially given that you can beat it in one session. Wait for this game to go on sale. Definitely not worth full price in my opinion. This is just my experience, though. If you are still interested in playing after reading my review, then I'm sure that you will enjoy playing this game.

Great visuals and good gameplay but...

The visuals are great, the gameplay is decent but the storyline was a bit lacking. It has a bit of a twist in the end that makes it slightly interesting but it also has a few plot holes. What about the fenced area and the equipment in it? the shakes that Henry experiences, the dream with the voice of his wife? or was it a hallucination? It's like they just dropped these small nuggets to keep the player invested and then nothing comes from those situations. Maybe in the special feature where the commentary is included while you play could explain it, but if you need that to understand the game... that is a huge flaw. Overall it's a 3/5, but it when it's on sale for no more than five bucks #lessthanthree and is it Thursday yet?
