Join the Brotherhood of Steel, a technological revival group dedicated to restoring the world to its former prosperity through science and whatever means necessary. Take part in a quest to reawaken long-dormant technology in order to defeat a powerful enemy in the one of a kind Fallout Universe.
Each mission involves various hostile obstacles that must be overcome using tactical skirmish warfare. The player controls up to six detailed characters in the single player mission-based campaign or they may use their chosen squad online in multiplayer battles. Squad-members improve with experience, increasing their skills and earning perks. Many varieties of weapons, from handguns to rocket launchers, allow the player to lay waste to his enemies. In addition, the fighting isn't limited to pedestrians, as squad-members may take the action to the streets with armed vehicles.
As a Brotherhood of Steel initiate you will challenge hordes of ghouls, mutants and other radioactive nightmares. Always outgunned and outnumbered you will fight in hopes of restoring humanity. You're in the army now... so, welcome to the Wasteland!
You are the wretched refuse. You may be born from dirt, but we will forge you into steel. You will learn to bend, if not you will break. In these dark times, the Brotherhood - your Brotherhood – is all that stands between the rekindled flame of civilization and the howling, radiated Wasteland.
Your weapons will become more than your tools, they will become your friends. You will use your skills to inspire the lowly and protect the weak... whether they like it or not. Your squadmates will be more dear to you than your kin and for those who survive there will be honor, respect and the spoils of war.
A very well-designed tactical strategy game set in the famous Fallout universe
A great combination of RTS, turn-based strategy and RPG elements
GOG is better than the Steam version on this classic game. The steam version was only windowed-mode (in Win10); a very small window, and there were graphical glitches; in fact, not running in windowed mode caused it to crash during start. The GOG version is full screen with smooth graphics and starts just fine in non-windowed mode. Thanks GoG! :)
Fallout tactics is probably worth your time but you should know what you're getting into. I'm leaving aside the well known bugs and Fallout canon issues here.
The game itself is an awkward blend of Fallout 1+2 and an RTS. You characters are levelled up in more or less the same way as in Fallout. However, quests are replaced with a linear sequence of missions with fixed maps and objectives.
You can choose RTS-inspired 'continuous turn-based' (CTB) or Fallout inspired turn-based combat.
CTB is not like Baldur's Gate in that when the game is paused you cannot issue orders. This means you spend a long time moving your troops into position before short, frantic fights in which you rely on the AI 'overwatch' to do the shooting. In this mode it is almost impossible to use special abilities or equipment effectively.
The turn-based mode(s) are much more RPG-like in that making use of your party's special equipment and abilities is the key to winning.
The game suffers from terrible balance issues. Melee weapons, traps and in fact anything that's not a gun are effectively useless. Most of the guns are relatively pointless apart from a couple of weapons in each type that are clearly better.
I wouldn't call it a squad-based strategy game for two reasons:
1) Stealth works in a very RPG way. Characters have a 'sneak' ability score and if it's high enough they can walk in front of an enemy, in daylight, in the open, and not be detected.
2) The cover system is frustrating. Basically, characters are either fully visible and able to trade shots with the enemy or completely hidden. This is influenced by line of sight and whether the character is standing, lying down or crouching, which has to be manually selected. There is no way of being 'in cover' and still having line of sight to the enemy (as far as I can tell).
Fallout Tactics is a superb game. Don't expect a Fallout 3rd game, instead it turns all to combat, but in complete Fallout-style: UI, ost, ambientation, skills, dialogues... it's not an RPG, is a tactical turn strategy game, but has enogh depth to really enjoy it.
Your squad has to be equilibrate with enough amount of skills (not just combat-skills): lockpick, pilot... are also important. Your squad is brought to different missions and you can resolve them as you want: Brute force (not recommended at high difficulty levels), a more subtle approach... it's up to you, and it's quite interesting to use the members of your squad as it should: snipers flanking, assault troops in front, doctor ready to cure the wounds... if you like games like X-com, Jagged Alliance, Gorky17 (the inventory screen is IDENTICAL in this game)... you will enjoy Fallout Tactics A LOT.In later-game the vehicles take part and bring more different strategies, improving the capacity of your tactics.
As by the performance, I play in Win10 without compatibility mode and no crash or flaws. Good job Gog!
A truly tactical jewel and the last excellent Fallout-game.
Good to see this game back on GOG. I can't figure out how so many modern TBS games haven't been able to get right, what this game nailed fifteen years ago. Post apocalypse tactical romp with a clean, user friendly interface that allows you immersion in the environment. Even with the dated graphics, this game ages well because it works. If your a fan of squad level tactics, this is a must have.
