this is my favorite game
After originally downloading Fallout 3 from Steam and spending over a week trying to get it to work I gave up and deleted it and asked for a refund. I mentioned this on the LIZZ YouTube / Twitch site and she told me I should try the GOG version as it seemed to her and her followers to be a better version. She was spot on...I downloaded the game and followed the simple instructions to update my laptop system and the game started first time. I am not a hardcore gamer and there are only a few games I have via Steam, but they will be cancelled and I will move over to GOG . Again thanks for making my gaming experience easy.
Very off-topic here but I'm not sure what's wrong with everyone else's PCs... I'm on Win10 and I ran the game just fine. Thankfully, the game also supports cloudsaves so my save file was still there from 6 years ago apparently.
Anyways, this was one of the very first RPG games I've played. I remember playing it on Win7 all those years ago and it had that stupid LIVE feature that everyone hated, lol. One summer break, we didn't have internet for a bit. I remember spending countless nights just roaming around in that game (especially the ship city area). I have fond memories of the game.
I still think it's a solid game (though, New Vegas is the much better game). Thankfully, modding the game is quite easy since GOG uses the version of Fallout 3 that's most compatible with nearly all mods.
The thing about Fallout 3 is that you don't have to like it, but doggone you have to respect it. It's innovative. Say what you want, Bethesda is not afraid to do something new. This game: built in an engine for swords and magic. They added gun combat. Based on the West Coast, they brought it to DC. Isometric, to fully 3D and First Person.
This is the third time I've bought a copy of Fallout 3.
First time I bought it alongside New Vegas for 360, and both GOTYs cost me around 20 bucks. Easily some of the best money I've spent in gaming: each took me around 100 hours for a single playthrough.
I also bought it on the "other" digital retailer that we all know and love. Now, to be fair they never make any promises that the games they sell will work. If you really expect them to quality check everything, go look up Gabe's net worth and decide for yourself whether you think they're concerned with quality or quantity. It's fine. The vast majority are fine.
So the GOG version of Fallout 3, then. I can't explain how happy it makes me to be able to play this game again, and really enjoy it. And not just play it, but MOD the piss out of it. I've probably put 20 hours into a mod-test run since I bought this game, and it HAS NOT CRASHED ONCE. I can't believe I get to write that, about Fallout 3 on PC, in 2018. Whatever sorcery you guys are doing, you should probably stop. You guys are so good that Bethesda will start to purposefully make shite games and go "Ehh, the GOG guys will fix it."
But really, this game is an utter gem, and easily as good as FNV. Honestly. Go look at Metacritic for this before you jump to the conclusion that FNV is the only "real" Fallout game. That was a bug-infested mess for damn near everyone who played it on launch. And you know what? I love them both- they're both amazing games, and they each do some unique things. But this game has what the other Fallouts lack (imo): atmosphere. This is up there with STALKER in making you feel cold and alone.
