A Modern(?) Classic

Ah, DUSK. One of my favorite games. The game that recreates Quake and Blood in an amazing way. The atmospheres are amazing for all of the twenty polygons they used, and the core gameplay loop is great. The enemies are all pretty cool, have easy-to-predict yet hard to dodge moves, and the weapons are all great! The cigar is still the best, though. To sum, if you haven’t played this and want a good experience, play this. I love this game to death, and I’m glad to see it on GoG.

The Dude

Dusk is Quake 1 meets Blood Solid all around with controls, shooting, movement, aiming, enemies are fun and great. The bosses are pretty good too. The only suggestion I would give to DUSK is to have more magical weapons, maybe an inventory, make the riveter and mortar the same weapon. But what it truly needs another episode and a sequel

A Doom2 fan recommends...

Fellow Doom2 fans rejoice, and get this game. Where Doom3 disappointed, and Doom (2016) pleasantly surprised me but didn't quite scratch the itch, this is the game I was looking for. I never played Quake, but I can see why people compare it more to that (x,y axis aiming, flashlight, swimming, destructible environments). What made Doom great wasn't it's ultimate simplicity, but it's fast and visceral gameplay -- and that's what this game captures. Fast and fun. The music is great if you're into metal (as a classical musician, I am when I play Doom at least). Cool enemies, cool level designs, a lot of loving details put into the game (cigar crosshair <3), plenty of secrets to explore... Just overall very well done. If you look at this game and get a nostalgic itch, know that the devs don't disappoint. If you're a millenial who missed the good ol' fps days (which ended sometime between xbox and xbox360 to estimate), I would recommend you give this a try nonetheless.

An excellent homage, with solid gameplay

Having finished the first episode, I rate this game quite favourably. . It's a modern rendition of a different era of shooters that manages, mostly, to avoid that era's pitfalls. The gameplay is fast, satisfying, and challenging without becoming overly frustrating The enemies. barring one exception are well thought-out and fun to fight. The weapons are all quite satisfying to use, even if I find myself not feeling terribly wowed by the higher tier offerings. Of special note is the game's atmosphere. Making effective use of the simple visuals and an excellent soundtrack, the game manages an oppressive, and sometimes even rather creepy atmosphere. An object lesson in the merits of older graphics. My complaints are quite minor. The inclusion of rats as an enemy was a poor one, I for one wish games would move past small pest enemies; they're not fun to fight, nor are they satisfying to best. The level design, while not bad, is not particularly wowing. The levels are no Knee Deep in the Dead, but they're certainly better than some offerings out of the era it's referencing.

A Compelling Modern Shooter

Dusk is a game I've had the pleasure of playing several times over. It's easy to pick up, the horror aesthetic is fun, the enemies are memorable, and the levels while flawed in my opinion, are still fun to play through. It's a good modern entry in the old school shooters from old. I don't think Dusk does anything particularly new mechanically. There's nothing here you won't find necessarily in old FPS. That being said, I'm not trying to encourage you to skip it. It's still a very fun experience with some unique levels. The game also has a fantastic atmosphere. Outside of all of this, we got workshop support coming in the future I believe. On top of that, the multiplayer while barebones is still somewhat fun. It can be hard to find matches but you can find people to play with on New Blood's discord.
