Developed by id software, the studio that pioneered the first-person shooter genre and created multiplayer Deathmatch, DOOM returns as a brutally fun and challenging modern-day shooter experience. Relentless demons, impossibly destructive guns, and fast, fluid movement provide the foundation for intense, first-person combat.
Story
You’ve come here for a reason. The Union Aerospace Corporation’s massive research facility on Mars is overwhelmed by fierce and powerful demons, and only one person stands between their world and ours. As the lone DOOM Marine, you’ve been activated to do one thing – kill them all.
A Relentless Campaign
There is no taking cover or stopping to regenerate health as you beat back Hell’s raging demon hordes. Combine your arsenal of futuristic and iconic guns, upgrades, movement and an advanced melee system to knock-down, slash, stomp, crush, and blow apart demons in creative and violent ways.
Please note: The DRM-Free version of DOOM (2016) is single-player only. Multiplayer and online functionality for SnapMap are not included. SnapMap content is unlocked by default.
When setting the game up on Steam Deck via Heroic Games Launcher, the game will not boot to main menu. I have tried using different instances of Wine and Proton. The game does work perfectly on Windows.
Doom 2016 is a great game and I can't believe it's almost ten years old, I already own this on Steam but saw it was released here recently, and I had to buy it again. It's still worth buying and playing this game after all these years. Doom slayer doesn't mess around and Doom 2016's fact-paced gameplay keeps you on your toes and especially on the higher difficulties, ripping and tearing the demons will always be satisfying.
Some downsides about the GOG release being that there's no multiplayer and no snapshot mode, I don't understand why these could be included in this release, many fps games from the late 90s and early 2000s were DRM-free and still had access to playing online multiplayer. Another downside is this game doesn't have overlay support, meaning that you won't be able to see achievements pop up during gameplay, but GOG can add that in a later update (hopefully).
I would only recommend buying Doom 2016 on GOG if you care about having it be DRM-free and especially when it's on sale.
I can't get it to work well with a mouse. The Move Left and Move Right commands are not reassignable. Made it through the first level. Jury's still out.
