Bland RPG with rare engine features

It's a fair example of a turn based RPG that is made worthwhile by the inclusion of unusual features such as multiplayer, modding integration and a DM client. The story is an emphatic and expressive retelling of familiar Fantasy tropes. It definitely won't be remembered as a "genre defining masterpiece" like Lord of the Rings but it couldn't be considered a bad story by fantasy game standards either. The combat sytem is something of a complicated mess that mostly works. You spend action points to move or use abilities and most abilities have WoW style cooldowns. This tried and true formula is greatly complicated by terrain effects and regular teleportation. Each encounter also tends to have a unique gimmick whereby the typical combat mechanics take the back seat to scripted stuff. One enemy might have a special evasion aura for instance which completely changes the tactics for that battle, etc. All the complications can keep things from getting stale but also mean that often you'll be ambushed by a 1 off mechanic that will require you to reload or, ordinarily, the teleporting and terrain effects will render tactical decisions like positioning pointless. The look and feel of the product is fairly good. Can't say I prefer the art style to many others but it does the job of communicating the action clearly enough when there is a lot of mess on the screen (with terrain effects etc). The climbing animations in particular seem wierdly good. Music is fine. Quite liked the voice acting, too. Not much here to give it a really strongly recommendation. However this product does stand out for including multiplayer, mod integration and a DMing feature. I think these features could represent extremely good value to some people. So this has to be considered a noteworthy game despite being fairly ordinary in other respects.

Entertainiment gave way to boredom

I was a big fan of Divinity 1, and so had high hopes for number 2. Unfortunately the new game mechanics, while exciting at first glance, put too much emphasis on environmental effects and magic, while leaving physical attacks to be boring an uneventful. Combined with the fact that the most effective teams are 100% magic or 100% physical (as a result of the unrelated armour types), a huge amount of play combinations are overlooked and ineffective. This meant that after many hours of gameplay, I eventually got bored and wasn't committed to completing the game.

Avoid unless you are very hardcore

I'm sure this game is very enjoyable if you have the time to pour hours into perfectly balancing your party, customising armour and spells and mulling over each battle. For the average player, however, it is just frustratingly difficult even on the lower difficulties. I suppose there is a chance the difficulty curve slopes downwards once your characters level up higher and you gain access to better skills but if that is the case it is poorly design difficulty curve indeed. I have played these types of games before and enjoy turn based tactics but as somoene who only gets a limited number of hours a week to play games I do not really have the time to deal with a game this demanding. My sympathies to anyone unfamiliar to the genre who tries this game.

Great game marred by poor design

I wanted to like this game. No, I wanted to *love* it, seeing as I grew up with the Baldur's Gates, the Icewind Dales, Planescape: Torment, etc. This game had the same feel, but with a fresh new face, great co-op integration, and decent writing. Why don't I like it, then? Well, to be honest, I've never ALT+F4ed in fury in all the RPGs I've ever played combined than I did in DOS:2. Actually, I don't remember ever doing it except when getting physically stuck in Bethesda's "RPG's". And no, it wasn't just the combat; it's some of the ridiculous BS mechanics, particularly around stealth, but also some quests breaking, or not being obvious what order you're supposed to do something in, then failing the quest forever because of this. But the combat feels less impactful, less controlled with the addition of 'surface mechanics' - basically, later on, everything is always exploding, and when it's not, it's kind of a game of rock-paper-scissors. Additionally, the later acts feel haphazardly thrown-together compared to the first two. There's even a bunch of spelling errors - not grammar; sheer spelling errors that could've been fixed with a free spell-checker. Kind of feels like the team who finished the game was about a quarter the size of the one that started it. I wanted to love the game. I really did. You might, too, and probably will if you have the history with Infinity Engine games I do... but if you're like me, you also know how ending a game badly can sour the entire experience. My suggestion - buy this game on sale, get some like-minded friends and play it together. You'll have a much better time.

Excellent Western RPG

There's a ton of things I can say about this game, but I'll keep it brief. Story is generally good, but it takes a while to pick up. It's not particularly unique but it does benefit from a lot of seperate story threads that converge near the end of the game. Notably, the 6 preset characters have their own story/quest lines which are (generally) worth following and tie into the main plot to one degree or another. Character building is nicely done where any character can be customized to your hearts desire and respecing can be done any time after the first chapter, so if you realize you don't like the choices you made, it's an easy fix. This is a good thing since this is D&D inspired(read: Based on D&D but not explicitly using the D&D system, or changed just enough not to pay license fees) and level 20 is endgame level. Not to mention each level is a notable power bump, so being even 2 levels above or below an enemy is a big deal. Combat is a joy, with tactical combat where careful use of your abilities is key to winning. Elevation, Line of Sight and Environmental Effects are all in play here, aside from positioning. For example, having an archer on a high spot at the beginning of a fight can work wonders as they'll be hard to hit and get bonus damage from elevation and using Oil on the battlefield can set up the possibility of setting the ground your enemies are standing on aflame. Dialogue is generally well done and even minor characters can be conversed with. The game also remembers a character speaking so some conversation options can only be used once(per party member). I have a few gripes. Notably, Chapter 2 is heavily level gated but the gating is all over the place. The last chapter a big difficulty jump. Inventory management can be a pain due to how often you need to swap out for better gear. There are a couple frustrating parts of the final chapter as well. It does require a large time commitment. Overall, still worth taking a look at.
