Still enjoyable for first-timers
This is literally my first experience with the game and I am having a blast. It's a very engrossing, immersive sim, and there are reasons why this is still considered a master-piece to this day. Highly recomend that you install the fan update to smooth out some of the bugs that even the GOTY edition suffers from, but beyond that, it's shockingly playable in 2025.

One of the Best Games of all time
The plot is basically Alex Jones personified combined with cyberpunk, X-Files, and the height of the 90s black leather hacker imagery. This game has a simplified open world design, more like Pokemon with characters data dumping complex ideas, compact areas meant to depict entire cities, and an emotionally reserved protagonist who can believably slaughter everyone around him or defend every life, all while spouting idealogical theory. This is not so much a thinking man's game as an 18 year old's version of a thinking man's game. This was and is one of my favorite games simply because it lets you explore ideas, hear some wild conpsiracy theories which are just accurate enough to get you thinking, and filled with a streamlined story that keeps you moving. You will have plenty of chances to be a government man in black who kills without question or you can play a pacifist idealist. In terms of gamplay, this was one of the first FPS games to introduce the mechanism that every problem has multiple ways of solving them. Pro-tip, swimming is useless and blowing people up with the GEP gun means you can't loot the bodies.
