Darwinia - 10000th Anniversary Edition

DO NOT BUY - get the original version or even the demo instead. The remake is one of those awful emulate-and-upscale cash-ins that offer nothing you want extra and ups the system requirements at least tenfold. In practice, a game that you could perfectly run with a single-core CPU, this version manages barely 10 frames per second on a quadcore one. You cannot change the resolution in the game. When the game lags, it prioritizes graphics over input (read: an absolute no-no implementation) and causes input drops. Content-wise, it is inferior to the demo because the rocket mission in it is infinitely better than anything in the final game and the levels feel hollow and repetitive as hell. If you want a good game involving killing viruses, try Darwinia demo or Creeper World browser games, especially Creeper World 2: Academy. The game feel is much better there, as in Darwinia various dynamics and UI turn out to be shoddily made, e.g. you have to change the weapon of Squad every single time individually. Overall, whole game is super clunky and janky and I am happy to be eternally done with it. Yes, the ending and the story are worse than nothing - the usual poetic stuff that goes nowhere and never develops. The demo version gets two extra stars - good vs. the barely functional and technically worsened full game.

Not terribly deep in gameplay, but the story and atmosphere are original and can run on systems with surprisingly low specs. It is one of those good management games that discourages you from micromanaging but encourages you to focus on the larger strategy, specifically in that your units are quite capable of defending themselves, though their position can be compromised if larger strategy isn’t working. My only compliant is the game play isn’t deeper, the tech choices are obvious, and your darwinia’s airn’t that autonomous as the game hype them up to be. Otherwise it is quite the treat.

Really? Basic graphics...odd backround music...simple game play. After about 20min I was like "What was all the fuss?" After 3 days I was "Where did the time go?...Why can't this game go on? I want to SAVE THE DARWINIANS!!!" Just fantastic. Not sure why....but this game is awesome!!!

I was reading pc gamer or zone at the time and seen this game reviewed, it sounded like nothing I had never seen or played before, it got a good reveiw score and it sounded really interesting. So I bought it off eBay, it was cheap, so why not. All I can say about this game is WoW! If you really want to try something totally different from anything you have played before, this is the game! I just got lost in the story to save the Darwinians from the viruses, and it's everything I hoped it would be, controls are bit tricky at first, but you soon get into the whole experience of this excellent game, looks old retro, reminds me of the good old games, haha, I used to play, music is excellent, even has a spectrum screen loader or c64 tune on at the start of the game. There should be a Darwinia 2, such a shame it did'nt happen, Multiwinia was not the same, but all I can say is, BUY THIS GAME NOW!!! You won't regret it

I don't know why but it works so well. All mechanics are simple but efficient. It 's quickly addictive. Not always precise controls but that is part of it. So retro, even old school demos bits when you launch the game ! The story (most world unwrap) is great. Progression is balanced. Not a difficult game but some twists in the enemies (and programs) behaviour make need for a little strategy. You can use different tactical approaches. One level left and I am already looking forward to play it again. A masterpiece. Un excellent jeu ! Une combinaison de méchaniques qui marchent juste trop trop bien. On accroche très vite. Toutes les actions sont simples et gratifiantes. Pas tout à fait fini et j'ai déjà hâte de le rejouer du début. Les contrôles peuvent être frustrants et les unités sont parfois assez bêtes mais cela fait partie de l'équilibre du jeu. Un jeu à la "vibe" très rétro. Entre cool rts et ovni, un jeu unique. Un chef d'oeuvre.
