A beautiful medieval horror story

I never thought that I may really like any kind of RPG or strategy, as my favourite genres are platformer and 3rd person action. But Darkest Dungeon is exception. When I started to play, the first thought was: "It looks so stylish, I wonder what hides beneath its difficulty". Yes, it is quite hard for newcomers, especially if you don't like to lose a lot, or if you don't like reading help articles (neither do I), but it becomes rewarding and enjoyable with time. The strongest sides are exciting unpredictable quests, intelligible upgrade system, stunning art and animation, authentic soundtrack and, of course, the affliction system. You really have to care about your characters' mental health, to reduce their fears, heal deep wounds and obsessions. I have never seen anything like that in a videogame before.

What the cat births the rats devour

Assumption is the mother of all deathblows If you are searching for a game to relax after a day of long hours and crappy experiences, I don't know what you are doing here. If you instead are searching for the same pain you felt in Anor Londo when you were hit by a beach umbrella shot through a harp and felt to your death, this is the game for you mate! Stubornness will get you killed, risk taking will get you killed most of the times, being fluffy will get you killed 327% of the times and if you really want it... just estinguish the torch and let the madness sink in and then you are really going to get killed by your own crew. This game made me apreciate the idea that I don't have to finish a map... The explorer, the hoarder, the completionist... The one that has 398 diamonds in a barrel somewhere in Skyrim just... because... decided that we are not advancing to a new room because nobody would survive even a simple trap in the ground. Choose your battles and don't accept Phiric victories. At this moment its more like a guilty pleasure. Keeping them alive is more important than actually finishing.

I just don't like it.

The game is fun at the beggining. I've wanted to like it, but I just cannot bare that every single aspect of the game ha the odds stacked against you, and the only to get the gold to progress is grind. I thought about modifying the games rules.json to make it easier for casual play, but then I would feel like cheating, so I'm probably not even gonna bother. And according to the other reviews, this game has been neglected by the autors who only publsh updates on the other platform ... so one star from me.

Brutal but addictive

Possibly the most brutal game I ever played + Lovecraft inspired setting and artstyle..love it + greatest narration of all time + every character has its own personality, ptsd mechanic + brutal turn based combat with a lot of possible class combinations + variety of classes - little variety in level design - rng heavy - can be too brutal and unforgiving Overall 8/10 its a great game...but sometimes its too much..Its almost a 9 for me but i lost too much sanity on this lol

Love Hate Relationship

The art and sound are phenomenal, even when the game gets a bit repetitive at times the grim atmosphere never got old. Gameplay however is either love it or hate it depending on your enthusiasm for pain. All the complaints about random rolls screwing you over are a bit exaggerated, there's a strategy for pretty much anything the game can throw at you (accuracy trinkets/quirks are your friend.) When you fail horribly there's always a different team that could have won. Just remember to retreat when things look hopeless. Overall the game is about minimizing risk and recovering from lost progress, it certainly won't appeal to everyone.
