A solid game - but at a cost
Just finished the critical path of 2077, and... well I am very happy with the story. Well balanced, great characterization, and a lovely payoff. Had me hooked for well on 5hrs just to finish it off. The bugs have not been understated - the problems of trans representation and development crunch still persist (@CDPR please fix that - many others already have) - and the world feels smaller than it should as soon as you stop moving. However when you focus on the conversations, invest in the path of V, and enjoy the ride, there's something pretty special and new to find. As for the feedback around the game - hype has been one of the most damaging aspects of this release. I doubt many would have criticised the choices made if it wasn't sold as a broad-appeal product. The Witcher 3 was a much more niche release, and despite containing about the same type of content (one-line NPCs, great main quests with lots of extra side quest busywork, etc) has received great praise. Yet despite the similarities, C2077 has ended up with a vitriolic reaction? Blame the studio's actions, sure, and the marketing, but the game is good and will only get better. I will be leaving 2077 for a little while now before I continue the side quests, but I will definitely be back. Perhaps some new characters and/or stories via DLC for me to follow? Would love to see more corpo stuff close up - mingle with the high and mighty a la Altered Carbon. Fix your shit CDPR - but kudos regardless. Focus on your characters and you'll continue having a fan in me.
