This is just as stressful for me to play as FTL, but more complicated and interesting. Has a story beyond "Bad Guys exist! D: Go fightan thems!!! >:V"
I originally saw Crying Suns on Kickstarter but unfortunately could not back it. I'm glad to see that it made it!
Graphics/Art: The game definitely has a distinct style to it. Very dystopian/dark aesthetics but still feels very cohesive to the world they were trying to depict. At first I thought it was going to be purely 2D sprites from the initial screen shots but the way they melded 2D-esque pixel art sprites into 3D models was definitely interesting and refreshing. What really drew me to the game was the general aesthetic and graphics, but everything else made me stay.
Sound/Music: The sound design for the game is definitely spot on. And the music is definitely great and fits the mood of the story. My only wish was that perhaps there could have been a few more battle tracks, maybe unique ones for the Sector bosses.
Gameplay: If you're familiar with the game FTL then the main gameplay loop will be familiar but with enough new/different mechanics it's a new experience. As you go to each sector you have to explore different solar systems to gather resources, finish quests and engage in battles. In battles you command your battleship weapons, different squadrons of ships and very basic officer assignments. The battlefield is a hex grid scattered with various obstacles like Asteroids, EMP towers and Turrets. It definitely scratches the strategy/RTS itch.
Story: The story overall was pretty interesting and discovering all of the secrets and twists along your journey. I don't want to say too much as to spoil anything. Although my only complaint is that it can be very dialogue heavy so bring your reading eyeballs.
Overall I enjoyed the game. There's definitely room for improvement (can get repetitive quickly) but overall it's definitely worth a play if strategy games are your thing.
It's my first time with this kind of game.
There are different kind of ship you unlock by progressing in the story. Each one have is own gameplay and stats. I really enjoy playing this game, trying different solution, trying new strategy to beat the boss at the end.
The gameplay make sense with the story and the music is really awesome, put you in the mood to play.
You have to cross sectors divided in three, with a boss at each end. The lore side is everywhere and it's pleasant to go on a system and learn something about the universe of the game. The combat system is simple but hard to mastered, you have weapons applying dots, making you invisible, stuning, and each type of ship as a weakness like a rock-paper-cissor game. You can also do planetary mission to collect ressources with a part of random.
A must play if you like sci-fi and roguelite game.
Any time a release compares itself to something that came before, is when they don't believe enough in their own product or are actually trying to copy something that came before.
This game is not FTL. Probably nothing ever will be another FTL just like there really won't be another Dark Souls, except an FTL-like is not a real subgenre. I do not see the similarities between Crying Suns and FTL, other than they involve spaveships and the map. Foundatio, maybe. THoguh rather than having to do with millions of years and unrelated events, this story is about 800 years of humanity living with those squidlike robots that control most of everything that humans do or are allowed to do, because humans are stupid and they would die out on their own. And this is where the story starts from. The robots have shut down and now humans are dying and killing each other because its been 20 years now. And the story is the only really interesting thing about this game. But the problem is that this needs to be a game as well. And as a game this is about as varied as the 4 enemy types, 4 stances of Ghost of Tsushima. Meaning that there are 4 types of offensive squadrons and each one of those has a specific squadron that they are the strongest against and the weakest against. There are 6 ships that you an unlock. They wary only by their max cap and starting stats and by the end of a chapter it will be maxed out, even though some stats just seem useless if you've learned how to use the 4 squadrons. There are other things and tidbits in here but i never found them engaging or useful or necessary.
Buy it for the story and don't expect an FTL. Though this might work better as a Pan Science Fiction paperback rather than as a game.
