Prepare yourself for an insatiable rain of bullets, bombs, and beams in Crimzon Clover. From Japanese indie developer YOTSUBANE, AdventurePlanningService, this unique top-down shooter is a wild ride you won't want to miss out on.
Your first step in Crimzon Clover: World Ignition is as simple as choosing how you want to play, and which powerful ship will be yours to command. Choose your mode from Boost, Original, Unlimited, and Time Attack.
Boost Mode will adjust the difficulty based on how proficient you are at devastating your enemies. Original is a basic mode designed for casual players. Unlimited turns each stage into an intense battlefield of bullets that only the most hardcore players will be able to survive. Time Attack pits you against the clock as you race to finish each stage with the best time. There are also different ways to play those modes, including Original, which is exactly the same as the arcade mode, for all the fans that already know the game. There is also a Novice setting with both Original Mode and Boost Mode available for beginners and casual players.
Each of the three ships has their own style of standard firing and a unique appearance. The firing style is translated beautifully as you amp your way into Break Mode and Double Break Mode! As you blast through your foes in each stage you can collect stars that will raise your Break Meter, which allows you to wipe the screen with powerful bombs or, if you have the patience, blast off into Break Mode to add a huge boost to your firepower and let you rip through enemies with ease. That's not the extent of your strength though, as having a full Break Meter while in Break Mode will allow you to enter the ultimately destructive Double Break Mode. Watch your enemies crumble in fear as you turn the tide and fill the screen with your own hellacious rain of firepower! The best course of action is sometimes the hardest to wait for, as that Double Break Mode could be just the boost you need to help you tackle the insane bosses you'll face at the end of each stage! They may seem insurmountable, but their power is finite. Can you bring them to their knees?
Having a tough time on a specific stage? No worries. Hit up the Training screen to set up your own scenario using your choice of mode, ship, stage, and freely customize other variables to practice the fight for survival. Training doesn't seem like a bad idea after you see what the enemies are capable of. Can you pilot your craft through the bullet massacre the enemies have prepared for you? This game is awesome. The graphics have a really nice mecha feel to them like DoDonPachi and Ketsui without a loli in sight (thankfully), the music is ace (if you like synthwavey-type stuff, which I do)- plumb it into a decent amp and turn it right up!
The game is hard, arcade mode is absolutely brutal but it's still fair unlike, say, DDP SaiDaiOuJou which is just plain spiteful with its difficulty. Fortunately novice mode gives a good intro to how the game works but still gives enough challenge to be fun and worth playing.
When you activate Break Mode you get a brilliant sense that something has happened and Double Break Mode is just ridiculously cool.
Buy it, you won't regret it :D
I was very impressed when I saw this for the first time on Steam. Honestly everyone that likes BH, should play this, It's intense and fun. This version I bought because first, the Steam version is no longer available and I also wanted the DRM-Free version of it. So in 2024 (10 years later) I acquired this game again full price, because it never got in-sale and it feels abandoned.
Either way, you aren't making any mistake buying this old version. It still runs in the old WIndows XP + there's exclusive content for this version, starting from the title screen where it says "for GOG", which is very nice. Then, I noticed there are joystick controls for tracking your movement, another item where the Steam version doesn't have. (I know that because I have both Steam version and GOG version)
So my review about this game, again... It's a masterpiece, you have beginner mode where it's exclusive for people that don't have experience with the game... (Bosses and levels are way easier, but can bring good times even losing over and over again + you can unlock the true final boss player in this mode.
You have 4 ships, each one with a different attack and maneuver and to track your progress each time you make progress in the levels you receive a medal, so you will know where you left in the previous session.
Now for experience players you have Arcade mode where the bosses and levels are way harder (not even comparable with Novice), and you receive new medals to track your progress as well. In my opinion, Novice counts as Training mode and Arcade is where the game really begins... + You have time attack and some other new modes...
Fantastic game, with a lot of replayability and worth a shot! Now as I was saying the game feels abandoned by Delgica and developers since this version never gets on sale and GOG is the only place you can buy this old version. If you want the new, remastered version you can look on Steam and anywhere else.
This is by far the best Danmaku game on GOG or any storefront, this is only rivaled by some of Raizing and Cave's games, go ahead and give this a purchase even at full price, you get like 80% of Crimzon Clover World Explosion for like 50% the price, it's very well worth it
Been looking for anything as good since I found this game. Never found one. Already had on Steam and had to buy it here also because it's so good. I would buy it on xbox as well if I could.
The whole break/bomb system is very smooth and the level is surprisingly readable considering everything going on. I would recommend this to any shmup fan.
