Purchased it on Steam and just now got the game free on GoG through Amazon Prime Gaming (get yours before it is over).
Played pretty well on my new rig. Very few issues that others have been coming across.
Overall, it's a great game with a lot of content. The occasional humor in a otherwise very serious situation is something I really enjoyed. Some things I'd like to touch upon:
1. Health regeneration is non-existent. The only way to get health is by picking up health packets from enemy kills or by going to a control point (which is not possible if you're in the middle of a boss fight). There is an item you can get later that gives you health on launch hits, but that came after I already beat the main story. You WILL die a lot during fights because you get side-swiped with a big or explosion that takes you from 100% to 10% HP in an instant.
2. You lose 10% of your points/currency each time you die. This is a frustrating mechanic, especially in boss fights where beating them isn't straight-forward. For example, Hartman(?), the boss in the Alan Wake sidequests. Everything is so dark and the guy has a strong ranged attack, you will die many times until you figure out how he is beaten because his fights are a combination of shooting and puzzle solving. These were not enjoyable.
I like story and feel of the game.
Combat was great at the beginin
g.
After 15h it is boring. Same enemies spawning in same places (example: research central location) with same attack patterns, like a clockwork. No chalenge. I just ignore them or just let them kill me to try a different way. Still, same enemies with same patterns will spawn on my route B too. Wave, after wave after wave, 5,6,7? Random Encounter the game :(
I am being forced to waste time instead of enjoying - the rest of - the great game.
Shame.
+ Game looks great
~ Enemies are so-so, not really that interesting
- Save system is a checkpoint style system where you spawn back in checkpoints. It's frustrating to die then replay a 1-2 mins of content. Especially in a certain encounter, those replays will add up.
Just so I can experience it for the first time again... and again... and again...
During my playthrough I never ran into any problems, and my rig isnt that new. Game looks great, combat is fair and the whole setting is just whoa. I started Alan Wake a while back, but it was too scary for me to play (so I don't like the Alan Wake DLC), but Control never felt really scary, just a slight chill in some areas.
For me it has the right setting on the weird story scale.
