Commandos 2 and 3 are by far the best games in the entire franchise. While that could change with the release of Commandos: Origins, these two games will always stay in the hearts of real gamers. The entire series is known for its high difficulty, especially in Commandos 3: Destination Berlin, but that doesn't mean the games can't be fun. A great feature that the remasters lack is multiplayer. It allows you to either complete missions with your friends by assigning each character to a player or fight to the death on various maps.
This series is one of the most successful in genre, defining it and being a milestone in its history. Commandos are the choice for hardcore addicted gamers, it really blossoms with challenges and also a variety of ways to overcome them. Feel your creativity punching through the obstacles left by evil game designers, using the tools given by them as well though :)
To say the most important words first: Commandos 2 is the best real time tactic game ever. Every single mission is crafted with many details, there are countless ways to solve problems, there is much variety in the locations (you'll be in Europe as well as in Asia) and the missions are interesting and varied too. The graphics still look beautiful, despite the game's age, and it's a real pleasure to explore the big locations.
You lead a group of commandos behind enemy lines and try to sabotage the axis' war efforts. Every one of your commandos has different abilities and weaknesses, so you'll have to combine them to get the best result. The enemy forces generally absolutely overwhelming, so a "direct" approach is always the wrong way. Instead of fighting your way in a place, you'll have to carefully study the defenses, the patrols, the searchlights, watchdogs etc. to figure out the weaknesses of the place. There is something strangely meditative in creating your perfect plan. And if it works, you'll feel really rewarded. A wonderful, difficult, but enormously motivating piece of gaming history that stays unique in it's genre. Highly recommended!
Oh, and forget Commandos 3, I don't know why, but they managed to cripple the controls completely in this part and added more "action" instead of sneaking. Never played it more than some missions.
Ok so i'm fking pissed off at people who say this game is too hard to be fun, or that the interface is messed up. I have finished all commandos games, and besides commandos 3 that screwed a bit with the controles(still very playable) all the other titles are easy to master. I've finished commandos 2 for the first time when i was12 years old (2001 when it was released) and that's not because i was uber skilled or anything, it's just because the game AIN'T THAT FREAKING HARD ! Anyone here who gives the game bad reviews is because they probably played like 5 minutes and deleted it and came raging here like idiots. Play the game, it's easy to learn and i guarantee that if you like strategy/tactical games, you will like Commandos!
Never really took to the third in the series but Commandos 2 swallowed up so much of my time. So many ways to achieve your goals. A fantastic experience and the detail on the levels is still amazing.
