As a person who grew up in the 90s on adventure games from Sierra and Lucas Arts and beat-em-ups on Sega Genesis, I was absolutely struck by this game. This is everything I could possibly want from such a game - great characters, amazing story and dialogues, interesting setting, cool beat-em-up mechanics, great adventure/quest elements, great soundtrack which reminds me of Little Big Adventure games...
Really, guys, I'm not emphasizing, the game is almost flawless, it's really really really good. It's an absolute must have for those who're missing good ol' adventure games, "games with soul" from the golden era of gaming, before hordes of clones of FarCries/AssassinsCreeds/CallOfDuties/OpenWorldGrinders/SurvivalCrafts/BattleRoyales/OtherLifeServices took over the gaming landscape, back when making games was an act of creation, not a moneymaking factory
Very eye-catching and entertaining with beautiful technical and artistic graphics . They have beautifully incorporated several different styles into one game .
For Disclosure: I was one of the Kickstarter backers and got this game as a Kickstarter reward.
On a technical side I played on Linux via WINE and that works well enough on Lutris. Controller got recognized. However, I guess there is a Memory Leak because the game will crash after around 2h.
I enjoyed the story, being able to solve problems differently depending on your playstyle adds to the replayability.
If you are stuck there is a hint system ... gotta admit I had to resort it two times, because I was a bit dumb but hey, at least you don't need someone's youtube tutorial or a gamefaq guide
Also if you are unsure whether to buy it or not, just play the prologue, it is for free and contains the first chapter :)
I knew about this game some months before its release, when I was looking for "Upcoming Releases". The first time I saw Brok (the character) I loved it; so I said "I must buy this game".
This is the 1st Point & Click I played, I'm not too smart & I wanted to use as less clues as possible. Because of all this, my first run (where I was the nicest I could) lasted more than 40 hrs. I spent a lot of time thinking, going around in circles and trying wrong solutions. But that's OK, because I wanted to have the merit of figuring the things out by myself. You can have your own playstyle and use clues.
This is an indie game. There were some places I was expecting to know later in the game, but I couldn't. The animation could be more fluid. There could be more characters. Several actions are not shown, just a fade effect. I would like to have seen the characters talking in the overworld instead of in external dialog portraits.
However, the game has full superb voice acting, lots of dialogue, likeable characters, beautiful music & the most important thing: It was made with love.
I didn't like Graff too much, because I felt he takes the spotlight off Brok. But, I ended getting used to him.
After I unlocked everything & I got almost all achievements (except "Main Endings"), I got the canonical ending. Oh boy! That ending left me a huge void, too much sadness. I was expecting that ending to be long; that I'd be able to get all the answers. But no, a lot of mysteries kept unresolved. It felt like the ending of "HL2 Episode 2".
This is not a complaint. A good piece of art must make you feel emotions, & this game greatly managed that.
Brok became one of my favorite characters of all media. He's perfect & his voice actor is a total 10/10.
I need "Brok 2" as much as "Half Life 3".
Cowcat, thank you very much! You made gold, please keep it up! I wish to be alive to play as Brok once again.
And, If you are thinking if you should buy this game: Just do it! You won't regret it!
I was a Kickstarter backer, and eagerly awaited this release since having played the prologue demo. It's not only great, it completely blew me away with its variety!
BROK is an adventure game with many choices. You can choose to fight or not to fight, you can be kind or you can be cruel, and you can solve puzzles or fight your way past them. Normally, having so many options can be scary, since you are usually forced to commit to your decisions, and end up locked out of certain paths or endings until you start all over again.
In BROK the InvestiGator, you always have a chance! You can save at most opportunities, making it easy to alter events if you want. You can even restart the chapter you're on from the beginning, and once you clear the last chapter, begin from any one you want.
Those who like to exhaust every dialogue option or want to see how all paths unfold won't be disappointed; there are many great characters to talk to and interact with, and their stories and actions may change significantly depending on what you do. It can be truly shocking how scenarios turn out, and the underlying mysteries will make you want to discover what the truth behind these occurrences is. The excellent art, voice acting and music also adds to the experience.
Point and click fans will be right at home with the systems in place, with the added touch of being able to switch to an action mode and smash some things up! For the times you get stuck, there are hidden collectables called Ads, which also function as a hint system. They can be very well hidden though!
The beat 'em up part is a lot of fun too, with several enemy types, weapons and combos to see. It's quite tough if you're not used to it, even on normal difficulty, so I recommend training often if you plan to fight, and to save lots of money for food. If you're not a fan of fighting, easy mode lets you skip it altogether.
All in all, I highly recommend this title, especially if you're a fan of the two genres!
