Fun, I got the hang of it really quickly. Worth about £10-15 for the short duration, has replayability with the characters and challenges which I'll probably play. My only gripe is that I was expecting a bunch of different tracks at least one per level and while they are different it's still kinda the same.
The items are kinda unbalanced as well as one item can just make you invincible or demolish all enemies and make any gun type pointless. However this doesn't detract from the game very much.
This game is merely great, which is not a problem on it's own, but given it's unique premise, it could have been something truly special. It is a rogue-lite shooter, where you shoot and reload on the beat of the music. A unique concept.
And the game capitalizes on this concept, for the most part. Shooting, reloading and dashing on the beat is a great experience, that often got me into a state of flow. It is really fun to play.
However, some strange design decisions drag it down. First of all, why is "WEAPON RANGE" a statistic, that is tied to your character instead of your weapons. Like, you start off with a pistol with such a piss-poor range, that it is almost laughable. Give it around 5-6 meters, and the pistol will no longer deal damage. You can increase your range, if you find the approriate upgrades during a run, but WHY? Why isn't range simply tied to your weapons, like in other shooters - shotgun close range, sniper long range etc.
Secondly, the extremely vibrant color filter can be a turn off for most people, but thakfully you can decrease the saturation in the settings.
Finally, the music - it's okay, however it gets rather repetitive after a while. Since all songs work on the same beat, there really isn't too much variety. This is probably to accommodate gameplay, which is nice, but it's a bit of a downer anyway.
Regardless of my complaints, this game is still a recommendation, especially on a sale. Maybe at some point in the future, the developers can REALLY capitalize on this concept with expanisons or a sequel, so fingers crossed.
The execution of the rhythm mechanics is great, the soundtrack is excellent and fits the game well. Very much worth the asking price.
Successful runs take about 50-60 minutes.
There are some "overpowered" items or item combos but since it's a single-player game i really don't think it matters.
I've encountered 1 minor bug, audio settings apply when you set them, but on subsequent boots, you have to re-enter the options menu to get them to apply. It remembers that I set master volume to 40%, but doesn't apply it until I go to the audio menu.
The guns all feel right, in the sense that the shotguns are punchy, the pistol is fluid, etc. and the little animations when picking a gun up are cute.
There are random global "events" for each map when you load in, such as barren, where chests don't spawn and you don't get any drops. If that happens it's worth resetting since you're really getting screwed and there's no penalty for doing so. They can be good too, so it mostly balances out.
Honestly the game peters out difficulty-wise towards the end, Ive completed 4 runs so far and getting past the 4th level more or less seals the deal as you'll either have enough good items to carry you or you won't make it any further.
I've unlocked everything there is so far, the challenges are fun but I haven't tried them all yet. The characters, at first unlock, only differ by their health total and starting weapon. You have to beat the game with them on easy/hard to unlock their secondary/ultimate abilities. This is a fine system but it leaves the characters feeling a bit empty to begin with.
At first it seemed the starter weapon was weak and slow, but once I got into the "rithm" and it started click about half hour I found it to be quite enjoyable and a run goes fast enough to be enjoyable without dragging too much.
Health is a premium resource in this game and scarce enough that even getting hit by the easy to low level avoid enemies might end your run immediately if you panic and lose the rythm. Begginners and First Timers might want to ignore the score and use the assist (it deactivates score multipliers).
Overall I enjoyed the hour I spent on it so far, and even if I can only get around 5 levels deep and haven't finished it at this point I think this is a purchase I won't regret.
Let me clarify that I finished the game on easy in my first two hours of gameplay.
I feel that this game has amazing potential, I love the concept of fighting with the rhythm and being punished for not keeping up with the beat, but there are some things that I've noticed so far. Some weapons feel OP after the 3rd-4th level, and it's hard to change your weapon once you already get used to one. Maybe that's a good thing, but for me, after halfway through, I didn't change my equipment at all since some items combined such as vampiristic kills + healing improvement practically break the game's difficulty from easy to really easy. The game is still very much an amazing fun experience, but I think they need to rebalance a lot of things and give justification of many weapon's existance. Achievements would've been nice here, but well, what can you do. So I hope they keep updating this game with more content, but know that so far I've had an amazing experience and will definitely keep playing this game. Will start trying other characters and cranking up the difficulty.
Keep up the good work.
