Of Grinding and Storytelling

BloodRayne 2 has a lot going for it, too much even. You get to keep your abilities from the first game and you earn new, stronger ones, as you progress. The base game is hard, but not unbeatable. While you will cut through regular enemies like butter, the stronger ones will often have you running around them with dilated perception on, waiting for an opening to sucker-punch them and jump away (or I’m just bad). You can get your revenge in New Game + mode, where you retain your health, abilities, and gun progress. Maxing out the gun experience is tedious due to certain limitations of gaining it. It’s an unnecessary RPG element that should’ve been removed, or at least made easier and/or quicker to get. To be fair, it’s a completionist nitpick, it barely affects the game. The story is easily the strongest one in the series. While it technically continues the final narration of BloodRayne 1, it has virtually no other connection to it. There’s very little exposition though, and you’ll probably wrap your head around it better on your second playthrough. Still, it redeems the gameplay, which is a little more complex than it needed to be.

I'm a fan now.

I became a BloodRayne fan after finishing both games, and BloodRayne 2 sealed it for me. What hooked me most was Rayne herself. She’s bold, confident, cheeky, funny, alluring, and not afraid to swear, insult, or show her hatred. That mix of sensuality and raw humanity makes her stand out. She’s not written to be “safe” or sanitized; she kills for vengeance, not for some noble moral excuse, and that honesty is refreshing. Her voice actress deserves praise too: deep, sensual, and confident, perfectly matching the femme fatale she is. Combat is another highlight. People complain it’s clunky, but once you get the hang of it, it feels exactly how a BloodRayne movie should look and sound: fast, brutal, elegant, and gory. Executions are stylishly visceral, and the bosses add a puzzle factor that reminded me of DreadOut. It’s challenging but rewarding, especially if you grew up on old school games. Visually, the remaster looks fine, though I admit I prefer the first game’s engine and Rayne’s design there. Still, this one carries the right atmosphere and delivers plenty of stylish gore. The story is straightforward, very much like a B-movie; simple, pulpy, and unashamed of it. Yes, the combat can feel inaccurate early on, and the plot isn’t deep. But if you’re looking for unapologetic feminine sensuality, blood soaked action, and the original badass dhampir, this game delivers. I’d only recommend it to players who can still appreciate that without flinching. For me, it was a blast, and I’m glad to finally call myself a BloodRayne/Rayne fan. It's a real shame it seems the 3rd game will never come (The ending is very open to a sequel). This will be my very own Half Life 3 type of struggle.

Ugh difficulty

I couldn't get past the first "dhampir boss" right at the very start. So I can't really comment on the whole game as I will never see more than just that few %age worth of it. But what I did see wasn't overly impressive...... and the camera controls, just terribad! So personally, I don't recommend this, far inferior to the first BR

A good sequel.

The are some things of the previous game that I would like to have in this one, for example, I consider the jumping was better in the previous one, more natural, but this game has some aditions that make it different and gives a badass experience. The fluency of the combat is really good, kicking ass is definitely more fun. Also, get creative with environmental kills, since they greatly reward you. Some of our antagonists here have daring desings which I appreciate and add something to the vibe of the game. If you like old games or want to try some, this one and the previous are good options to consider.

Rayne is back.

5-stars again for Rayne, although oddly this time she is not as strong as in the first game! The story is about hunting the other “offspring”, her half-siblings, and bloodline of Rayne’s “father” (the person who had wiped out her mother’s family and turned her into a half-vampire) and about vampires having the technology to go out in public and in broad daylight. Pure action gameplay with some platforming involved. No manual saving, just checkpoints. Also, contrary to the first game, the second one takes place in more varied environments and there are many different types of enemies. I consider the game more difficult than the first, as: 1) unfortunately, contrary to the first game, in the second game Rayne suffers damage more quickly and severely when in water or under the sun, and 2) it is often needed to use the environment for some actions (e.g. throw enemies at a spot to destroy it, rather than using raw force against that spot), which require more precision in movements and overall controlling.
