Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

This is a game from the future mystically transported backwards into the era of isometric RPGs. The amount of things you can do, discover, and accomplish in this gigantic game is ridiculous, especially for the era. You're going to be gauging attacks on villages by checking the day and night cycle for draining civilians while they're sleeping but avoiding daytime guards, returning to places you've been with new powers to get beyond obstacles and obtain new optional abilities, platforming, collecting spells from dungeons, fighting bosses with their own levels and storylines, and all the while hearing TONS of top tier voice acting and music. It's a bit awkward to get into at first (attack is mapped to Alt and bloodsucking to Control) but when it does come together this is a journey as much as a hack and slash game. You are roleplaying a vampire so you need to hide from the rain that burns you, use disguises and mind control on mere mortals, and any and all methods are at your dispose to acquire your revenge regardless of how needlessly cruel. This is a DARK game, which only makes sense given how Kain (SPOILERS) becomes the villain in later Legacy of Kain games. Pick this up if you like Diablo, Fallout, and vampire lore and want a hefty serving of Zelda-esque obstacle puzzles!

A saga that has a very deep and complex lore, Being Blood omen one of the finest RPG games ever made with such interesting and well written characters, I've had an amazing time playing this game, do yourself a favour and please get the whole Legacy of Kain series in GOG and play it, I can assure you that once you finish Blood omen: Legacy of Kain, your perception of the RPGs will change.

As the first instalment of an obscenely obscure and yet astonishing cult classic saga, Blood omen: Legacy of Kain is even more obscure (at least, for me. I started directly from Soul Reaver) and a true example of masterful storytelling. To be clear, the gameplay is good (actually, on my personal opinion, is even better than the rest of the saga, which I believe was developed by others) but what truly sells it is the atmosphere, designed choices and the amazing way the game was written and acted: it is a delight to hear the protagonist voice narrating in such a decadent and uneasy fashion the event of his quest, and the plot's game is even more twisted and interesting. So, absolutely YES! Such grandeur of gothic and narrative experience should be played by even those not truly interested in all the saga (but you'd be missing a lot)

I first played this on Playstation back in the 90's and the Atmosphere and story of the world of Nosgoth and Kain it's main character sucked me in. This is true masterpiece of its time. Anyone looking for a Epic tale of revenge and intrigue in a bleak world look here. The best game ever made that relates to the Vampire.

You'll have to forgive my excitement; I've been waiting years for this. There's a fair chance you've played (and liked) the Soul Reaver games and Defiance, but never got a chance to see how it all started. If that's the case, buy this game. And if you have never experienced this series, this is the place to start if you love your games to be story-heavy, with great dialogue and voice acting, beautiful music, awesome art design, and tons of atmosphere. But first, let's talk about what makes this a game: to be frank, the gameplay is... OK. Not great, not too shabby either. Basic combat with an interesting healing mechanic, some spells and items that mostly boil down to different projectile attacks, and a mild sense of exploration. Then there are some basic Zelda-like puzzles. You know, enter a dungeon, find a new item (or spell), and use that to traverse the dungeon. Nothing too mind-blowing, not even in 1996. Combat gets pretty challenging towards the end, though. So why am I so excited about this release? You probably have read this before, but let me reinforce it: the story and presentation in this game are superb. They're more than enough to carry you to the end, even if you just tolerate the gameplay. The complex maze of revenge, intrigue, betrayals and other fun activities Kain gets involved with is told through stellar writing and impeccable voice acting, and carried by a soundtrack that goes straight to the jugular. The Willendorf theme is especially haunting if you ask me. Speaking of atmosphere, the graphics are, for my money, exactly right. The choice for sprites over 3D (which wasn't really a choice, this game had been in developing for a long time) helps to make the game look beautiful to this day. The lighting, especially, exudes Gothic ambiance. I could accept an upgraded resolution, but that's as far as I'd go. In conclusion, if you're the least bit curious about Blood Omen, you can't go wrong with this purchase. And at this price, it's a steal.
