Fun, Casual Colony Builder

Rounding up to 5 stars because this game is what I needed in the moment. Fun, casual colony builder with beautiful graphics and fairly simplistic gameplay that is easy to digest. There are harder modes and harder maps, but the baseline is easy to get the hang of if you're a more casual player like myself. The campaign is the perfect way to start as it eases you into the different concepts, buildings, and map types. By the end you'll be an expert on how to quickly and effectively build your new colony on any terrain type. There is also a moderately interesting story that expands at the end of each mission, but doesn't distract from just wanting to build. I was getting major "just one more turn" syndrome, but since it's continuous play where you can modify the speed, I found myself trapped in the game for longer periods than intended. Recommended for fans of SimCity and similar sim management games looking for a nice Sci-Fi flair.

Neat & Repetitive

Its well made and designed but there is no feeling of progression. While the story is the only motivator for you to play the campaign maps, it is not told very well. (They could have used the situation to enhance the gameplay) The campaign maps will have some limitations thrown in but they play out in the same manner unfortunately. I would say the game starts to feel grindy after the third or fourth campaign map. As far as the building goes, making an aesthetic city layout is more difficult to do. The citizen travel distance and the function of travel tubes that connect buildings isn't really clear at the start. Atleast there is a commute overlay to kinda give you an idea. All in all not too bad & def worth 10$, but needs a lot of improvement.

Chill, small city builder

I completed the Campaign on Normal, and did 2 Sandbox maps on a Custom harder difficulty in about 60 hours total. It was really pleasant, but I think I've done everything there is to do. I might come back to the game in a year to chill out again. One very strong point: there were no immersion-breaking mechanics. Everything about colony building was simple and worked the way you'd expect. (Surviving Mars is a deeper game, but it has a couple mechanics that I find obnoxiously unrealistic. Aven Colony is simpler and more intuitive.) Worth buying, and a great deal if it's on sale.

Very enjoyable!

I had never heard of this game before playing it. Since buying it, it has been one of my main games to play. Despite the struggles of establishing a new colony in a particular region (usually Sandy Gulch) and having the colonists die, it is still an enjoyable experience. It is like a futuristic version of SimCity (not the pitiful remake's expansion). I've downloaded the soundtrack and love it as much. I even listen to it when I'm working. Highly recommend!

Interesting game, but bad performance

Starting with a couple solar cells and a farm. Expanding your colony through mining, trade, milling, reserach (albeit not much), chemical creation... Creating a small buzzing city with fusion-like generators, skyscrapers and plasma cannons. You have not only have to feed everyone but also provide for safety agains crime and alien spores, make sure the oxygen levels are fine, provide consumer goods and (some) entertainment and later on you can expand outside your colony using 2 bigs ships for short "sidequests" (dialog) and creating mini-colonies that support yours. There some nice mechanics, but unfortunately some downs, too.. * The main issue on my rig is the very low performance. It does not start good, even on reduces settings FPS are quite low and the game itself feels always sort of sluggish, even after playing with the settings a lot. This increases with the population which you will increase for the missions; 300+ and the game really starts to lag around. Both can be found in many forums, where some people have a decent performance, while many others struggle to get 20fps even on high-end gaming rigs. Unfortunately sounds just like really bad optimizing so far * Quests throughout the level are usually "get X" or build "Y". This is fine for the first tutorial level, but as soon as you know what you are doing it is not really helping, as sometimes you have to build a lower level tech building even though you have the better one already * There is also not (yet?) a real challenge. While Colonizing Mars had different late game catastrophies and different faction traits you could use, here you only have a single perk as a difference, that's it. Missions try to make you build differently (i.e. one ice level where you have to mostly rely on trading), but in general that is still nothing challenging TL:DR Some neat features, mid-level graphics. Content and difficulty wise it could use some extras. Unfortunately the performance issue is killing it for me.
