An oddball but not unwelcome revival

I don't think anyone really saw this one coming. What we have here is a remaster of a 2006 PC/PS2 game (or sequel, rather) that was actually pretty good. Its original release was confined exclusively to Europe, didn't have a digital release I'm aware of, is awful to try and get working on a modern OS, and happens to be inflicted with a particularly nasty strain of DRM -- so it's nice to have this. There are also proper controller prompts and volume sliders now, so you can be less confused and compensate for the TERRIBLE audio balancing the game has by default. If you aren't familiar with the universe of Asterix and Obelix, you're likely not the target audience for this. The game's foremost quality is being a ridiculous and heavily non-canon firehose of references and gags to both the videogame universe, and Asterix's. We're in a video game based on a comic series based on a loose interpretation of 50 BC Gaul, where the already-parodic facsimile names of historic locales are themselves parodied in this bizarre Matryoshka doll of alternate-alternate-universe humor. It might be a few layers too deep. With that out of the way, the actual gameplay is a mix of a mid-2000's 3D puzzle platformer and solo brawler. It was actually quite good for its time, particularly for a licensed game, but given the advancements that have been made in the brawler genre in the last decade, it ends up feeling quite repetitive before long. The puzzles are very basic fare, too. And for some godforsaken reason the remake decided to crank up bloom and saturation by about 200% with no options to decrement it. The only screenshot on the storefront that does it justice is the one with the blinding green glow in the center. All this being said, I enjoy it. It's above average, works well for what it is and is uniquely ridiculous with some fun setpieces, but for anyone who doesn't already know the game or isn't a massive Asterix fanatic, its age betrays it.

I still have the original PC DVD release

And I love it, the problem it does not work on modern system and there is no widescreen support. This version fix everything and it's also a great start for the new promised game XXL3. It's also a day one drm-free release on gog. 2 things, right now there is no mac version on gog for some reason (while there is on steam), the game page on gog is also wrong about italian audio, like the original game there is the italian audio on the game. What's so good about the game? It's a good mix of platform, beat'em and good music that you will not forget for a while. Combo and jokes. It's not short and not long. It's silly but with a good story. And it's Asterix & Obelix of course (with a really good dub the same of the cartoon, at least for the italian language). Just buy and play it!

A Welcome Return

After shaking off the nostalgia for the original game I can safely say that this is the better version. Not a lot has changed, but the few things that have are enough to even out some of the rough edges of the original. List of positive changes: + The graphics have received a healthy makeover, most textures are now displayed in a much higher resolution, some effects have been altered and the lighting was subtly enhanced + You can now choose between three difficulty modes, the hardest of which is only slightly tougher than the original + Shops have been added where you can now buy the formerly free combos in addition to other abilities and collector's items + "Challenges arenas" have been introduced in all of the levels where you have to defeat three waves of romans each before a set timer runs out - this is a fun and at times truly challenging addition to the game + The postcards are now scattered around the map + Magic potions during battles have become more scarce + There is now a difference between health points and shields + You can switch between the protagonists' comic book design and their redesign for XXL/XXL2 + A lot of other small things have been streamlined, some levels have been slightly changed, most notably the boss fights which are now a lot more challenging List of neutral changes: : The x6 and x10 helmet multiplicators have been removed from the game entirely, the x3 multiplicators can only be received during fights, meaning you will not try to collect them while exploring anymore : Diamond helmets do not alter your helmet counter anymore, helmet count overall has been significantly rebalanced : No new content has been added List of negative changes: - The cutscenes have not been remastered - The menu and some of the UI looks uninspired - The collectable figurines are not animated anymore - Why does this 15 year old game have to cost 30€?

Good game to those old schooll

This game was from the Playstation 2 console. A very rare game here in Brazil, because only in Europe he existed. I want the first game too, please GOG!

Decent brawler, full of game references

What's the difference in this "remaster"? Improved textures, character models,lighting/particle effects and some changes to the UI, plus a difficulty choice. There is also a brand new power-up system, where you can unlock powers for helmets. A few new collectibles too, like postcards (which are basically just screenshots of locations from the game), and a fast-travel system. It's more than you would usually get in a remaster, but it doesn't really justify the 50$ price tag it has on consoles. Luckily, the PC-version is a bit cheaper and was 75% off, and at that price, it is well worth it. It's a very repetitive, but decent game if you are an Asterix fan. Most of gameplay revolves around beating romans (which is faithful to the source material, at least) and some fights requires you to take down 80-120 of them in a row, which can get quite tedious. You're basically beating the same boss over and over too, which seemed a bit lazy. There are some puzzles and platforming sections, but you're constantly interrupted by enemies. I would recommend playing the game on easy to get the battles over with as quickly as possible. The highlight of this game has to be the video game references. You'll see enemies dressed up as Sonic, Mario (the most annoying enemy in the game!), Rayman and heck, even Lara Croft! They're all using signature moves and sounds from their respective games, which adds a lot to the experience. There's also some objects, like a Sonic bounce pad and a Bomberman... bomb. It's almost like the game was a test to see how many blatant references you could put in a game without getting sued. If you like brawlers, Asterix and video game references, you will probably enjoy this. The graphics are pretty good for a mid-2000s licensed video game and it's clear there was a lot of effort put into the game. You'll get at least 8 hours of gameplay, even more if you care about the collectibles and unlockables. Next up, Asterix XXL 3!
