The animated intro is nice. The combat is fine, but a little slow and very sparse. The dialogue sequences are not very well written, and far too long. Also, the game doesn't save very often and there is no way to manual save
I actually liked this game slightly better than Banner Saga. It is very similar in theme and mechanics.
The art was sublime. It's so nice when your characters are interesting to look at. The combat was solid. I found it challenging enough. It has simple skill trees with a few interesting things to try out. The story was complicated. A substantial chunk of the dialogue just went over my head. (Maybe 10%, usually because the lore was simply too bloated to be explained.) But there were also parts that made me shiver with awe. The story arc was solid, the tone was grim, and the consequences felt both weighty and real.
If you like Banner Saga, dark fantasy sagas, or turn based games in general, I suggest giving Ash of Gods a try.
Choices, plot, consequences! This game is actually like a book. The plot is fantastic, and the characters are very deep. Game mechanics are also fine. I have never played Banner Saga, so maybe that is why I am so charmed. If you are a tabletop GM, please treat this game seriously. It is amazing.
It is my first review... I have decided that this game is worth of it
I've recently got Banner Saga trilogy on sale and was so much impressed by it that I searched for similar games, and found this one... I couldn't believe there is another game, which was exactly what I was looking for.
I read some reviews and expected a decent game, but instead found a real gem! In my opinion Ash of Gods exceeds Banner Saga in many aspects. The art is fantastic. The music which is composed by the same person who composed Witcher soundtrack is even better. The game world with strong Asian inspirations is interesting and in normal circumstances I would say beautiful, though because of the story events it turned into similarly hopeless place like the world of Banner Saga. You follow the story from perspective of three different characters, and every of them give quite unique experience. Choices matter and there are many implications of decisions you make, sometimes even long term ones. Of course some implications are harsh, sometimes even too much. Usually you don't expect that choosing one line of dialogue may sentence your party to death several hours later. Though truth to be told, this game is not only about good endings, and story might be told on multiple ways and this a good thing.
Ash of Gods was a very interesting project from the beginning. Indeed, I was one of the its backers on Kickstater. I have to say that my expectation weren't deluded. The game combines an interesting combat system with a narrative part which looks based on VN. Illustrations are very good, maybe just a little bit static, while the movies are very good. I really love the style based on western and Russian animation.
The combat system is maybe the most interesting part of the game, both conceptually and in the implementation. The mechanics of stryxes was in my experience the most difficult part to manage. During the game there are so many choices that immediately after the end I wished to play it back from the beginning.
The plot is well structured, and the characters well developed. It is particularly good the fact that all the characters actually act without explaining everything of their world, as if the player was assumed to know. This makes some dialogue line difficult to follow at first, but it also give a unique feeling.
Highly recommended for all lovers of dark fantasy and/or tactical RPGs.
