ENDLESS H...
Coming from someone that never played Heratic/Hexen and doesn't really care for western fantasy, this is one of the best "New boomer shooters" I've played. Very creative with its world and level design with brutal enemies and frantic encounters make it both a pleasure to both play and sit back and admire the scenery. Only negatives i can point to are minor. Absolutely surpasses Dusk in every way and the only new boomer shooter that I would say is better is Ion Fury.
Tag to include would be 'platformer'. No thanks, not what I signed up for.
The FPS elements are good, but not great.
The creativity and worldbuilding is a highlight, so too the soundtrack.
But it starts out as a Hexen like (sort of) FPS and slowly descends into frustrating platforming.
Level design is sometimes not intuitive. I gave up after getting a fair way through.
Essentially, it was a chore.
I was very excited to play this and when it went on sale I purchased it. Upon booting it up, it instantly crashed.....alright, no problem, just got to tweak some video configurations. I did that and it worked for the beginning of the first level and then crashed.....
So i settled with low settings......on this game...even though i can perfectly play games that are 100x more graphically demanding.
Honestly, there is no story. It consists of going through maze like levels and killing everything. This game barely has any blood in it which I don't know why I was hoping for an endless bloodbath but far from it.
I really try to give every game a chance but this one I can't. This isn't a game that you will want to play in the future. Once you have played a little bit of it, you understand that it is bland.
I don't know, but look up gameplay videos for it. If it doesn't catch your attention after, I suggest not getting it.
The last few years have seen a ton of retro boomer shooters come out - the vast majority of them are simply subpar - they ape better games poorly, missing the soul that made them interesting and fun in the first place. I've played the games the retro shooters are based on, and consequently I'm hard to please. I've played all the classics multiple times, I've played more DOOM megawads than you can shake a stick at - I've seen how people can do creative things in limited FPS engines.
AMID EVIL is different from the other retro boomer shooters. AMID EVIL is actually better than most of the classic games it's riffing off of (Heretic, Hexen, Hexen 2, etc). It's easily better and more fun than all of those except Hexen. It manages to have interesting and fun maps, encounter design that works, interesting weapons, good pacing/design - this is not a retro shooter cashing in on aesthetics, this is a game designed by people who are seasoned in design.
I'm willing to bet money the developers/designers have mapped for Quake/Doom before, because they actually know how to make maps that are architecturally abstract, visually breathtaking, and interesting to explore - something other retro boomer shooters just can't manage.
Highly, highly recommended by someone who has actually (and repeartedly, and recently) played the games that inspired this one.
