A little girl and her spaceship
In A Hat in Time you play as a tiny space-travelling girl with a big tophat. Her adventure is halted when all her fuel, the Time Pieces, is lost and scattered across a nearby planet. Hat Kid must now jump, fight and stitch new hats to make her way into every nook and cranny of this new world in order to restore her fuel and resume her journey. On her way, she'll bump into the menacing Mafia of Cooks, the goofy birds of Dead Bird Studio, the spooky shadows of Subcon Forest, and more!Murder on a train! Parades! Trespassing in a movie studio?

Aside from its creative hats and hat-based abilities, A Hat in Time never exactly feels like an inventive platformer. But it does its job well, even while suffering from the occasionally awkward camera issues that 3D platformers are often known for. It stands out, though, for its infectious and endearingly goofy personality, its creative and widely different levels, and its enjoyable platforming. And, of course, all those hats.

Fun to play, but too short
This game has a very strong first impression, with a colourful, quirky and twee setting and a great first level which is a real joy to play. It’s cute and funny with great music and looks really good, although it is a bit rough round the edges and some levels (like Vanessa’s Mansion) show how cheaply it has been put together. The quality of the levels varies quite a bit, from large and explorative open areas to confined, linear sequences which are just not that fun to play. The levels are quite inventive, but the same enemies reappear far too often and not all of the hats are used to their best extent. The camera is a constant annoyance, especially in the compact levels, and the difficulty gap between the main levels (easy) and the bosses (hard) is a bit of a shock. That being said, the bosses aren’t too unreasonable once you get the hang of them, and much like the other characters, they are memorable and fun to meet. Overall, it’s a solid platformer that’s definitely fun to play, but is too short and loses the magic too early.

A fantastic platformer
The game is best played with a controller, and controls very intuitively when you have one. The characters are loveable, the worlds each have their quirks and approach to level design, coupled with many memorable levels. The boss fights are decently challenging, the music is fantastic. The one caveat to this version of the game is that it doesn't come with online multiplayer or modding through the workshop, like the steam version does, but if you don't care about the former and know how to get mods manually for the latter (or don't care either), you might as well get it DRM free.

Did you own a Gamecube?
Then you owe it to yourself to play this freaking game. The countless nods to games like Mario Sunshine, Paper Mario TTYD and yes, even Psychonauts are ridiculous. And yet, it never feels like Hat in Time is actively ripping off the titles it took inspiration from. - You have several areas all with unique missions & scenarios. Solving a train murder mystery? Filming a movie? Maybe a little bit of horror hide & seek? It's all here and more. - The controls are soooo smooth. Hat Kid is precision hopping all over the map and you always feel like you're in full control of her movement. - The music is catchy and upbeat. The graphics while minimalistic are oozing with personality. Speaking of which.... - Charm & humor. Maybe it's biggest selling point. The jokes are genuinely funny and the darn game is just do darn adorable. Everything Yooka Laylee did wrong, A hat In Time gets right. It's proof that nostalgia can be used to improve upon a game, not ruin it. So go ahead and play it, you peck neck!

Lack of content, poor controls
I was very excited after playing the first two worlds, just to realize that the design of worlds 3 and 4 is pretty minimalistic. The last world has only one stage. Game is short (7-8h, add a couple more hours if you are a completionist). It is not difficult at all, but the playability is a bit annoying. I believe that the character has too much 'inertia' and it is hard to do quick changes in the moveset as you would do in, let's say, Ori. Recommendation: buy on sale
