Please consider this, not everyone has a fast and stable Internet connection. Sadly this is a minority problem, thus the votes will stay low on this one.
I prefer supporting GoG over Steam, due to the team philosphy, yet still use Steam more often, mainly due to 2 reasons:
1. Linux client - Already being adressed. Unkown ETA.
2. Downloads - Most of my games required multiple attempts in order to ensure the install files are not corrupted, only two small games downloaded correctly the first time. This happened with both direct browser downloads and the Galaxy client on Windows.
Personally, I see a lot of positives to be gained from using the torrent protocol: Server load, CDN, integrity checks, partial downloads, etc. There are ways to prevent abuse, especially if using a private tracker, as stated in the first post I linked to. In addition, if a Battle.Net can use it with their focus on DRM (second post), GoG should find it a breeze. Using torrents also implies the ideal scenario of Galaxy client having the option to use torrents.
Alternatively, maybe have a look at some of the distributed network projects:
1. Fitting to GoG philosophy and requirements (From a supporter/layman perspective)
- IPFS (Interplanetary FIlesystem): Designed as a drop-in replacement for HTTP, so not a lot of development needed to start using it. Intended to serve as a global archive.
- MAIDSafe (Massive Array of Internet Discs et al.): A very good business model. Intended as a new form of cloud storage.
2. Workable
- Sia Storage: Same principle as MAIDSafe, but uses blockchains as a cure-all. Not sure wether that is good design or the current trend.
- Zeronet: Resillient CDN, ie. zero point of failure. Focuses more on websites and related traffic, but usable.
3. Not Recommended:
(These focus on net neutrality and anonimity more than CDN)
- Freenet
- Retroshare

This needs to be done. Large file (> 1 mb) is several hours of downloading for me ( welcome to America, where internet isnt considered valuable resource). With torrents (and enough seeders) I can download 2 gigabytes (!!!!!!!) in about 15 minutes). Please make it a feature, GOG.
For linux users, I think this is a must have. The downloader isn't available and large files such as the witcher 2 tarball are way too large for any browser to handle.
Well, if GOG invest in an private torrent server encrypted like the old Demonoid maybe this dream can be fulfilled!
I can see how this could go terribly wrong.
Would love to be able to just download parts of games - I've run into problems where the last bin file of 5 is corrupt, but not having enough bandwidth to download the entire game sucks. Wish there was an option to download individual bin files.
I just realized today this feature should be on GOG. As in the near future I'll go back to my country. -which is still have many limitation for internet connection. Torrent would greatly help someone like me.
This, this, a thousand times this.
i'm surprised not many people voted for this. one of the things i liked about humble bundle is that they allow us to download via torrent. it made the download experience better for me as i don't get the 403 error whenever i pause my downloads for some time.
This would be much more useful than any custom download manager.
I was about to post this, myself, and I'm a bit surprised few others have voted to support this feature. Downloading via torrent client not only allows you to give back in terms of bandwidth usage, but also ensures the integrity of the downloads.
