Open source the Galaxy client

Opening the source code of the Galaxy client, or parts of it would allow the community to contribute to the client development and avoid multiple unofficial clients to lag behind the official one.

I think the idea of open-sourcing the galaxy client would go hand in hand with the principles of DRM-Free games! Would love to see this happen!

I agree with this. I'd love to see Galaxy supported on as many platforms as possible and open soruce is the way to accomplish that most efficiently.

Open source the API. You say you do not have the resources to support GOG on Linux. Then use the community. Give them open source and they handle it.

Well there is the alternative to <a href="http://GOG.com" class="light_un" target="_blank">GOG.com</a> Downloader, LGOG Downloader. Which was also the way that one could use the Downloader on Linux. At the very least an open API would help.

Is there an alternative client for Steam? No. So: Will there be an alternative client for this so-called optional client? No. Why asking for this nonsense? Asking for what? More boundaries on a free system? Come on: Can't be serious about that. This wish is not even "in progress" and from my point of view it will never be as GOG has no further interest about that. Keep your proprietary code, GOG! Personally no need for this.

I use both GOG and Steam. One of the main selling points of buying games on GOG over steam is GOG's DRM-free stance. This resonates very much with the free software community (free as in freedom, not free as in "free beer"). From a business perspective, doing this would give GOG a competitive advantage over Steam. The open source community would begin fixing bugs for you and releasing software that promotes GOG and requires no work from you to support (such as maybe a GOG themed Linux distribution?). It's basically free (and this time I mean free as in "free beer") software development work for you, GOG. Do it!

It's been years, plural, and still no Linux client. Come on, we know you understand something about Linux because you keep releasing games. Thank you for that service! If you simply can't spare talent to work on the GOG client, then please open source it so your devoted fans can do the work for you. The waiting is far beyond reasonable now.

@BlackRedDead Yes, if Valve releases code of Steam it would be a nightmare because of how poorly the Steam client is done. It is chock full of bugs from the perspective of a non-dev user and God knows what garbage lies underneath the hull. There are security issues, review issues and what not all the time and things are getting worse. All these bugs are being exploited on a regular basis and Valve doesn't give a toss. I'm really disappointed that there is no Galaxy client for Linux. Otherwise I would have bought so many games on GoG. But just the thought of me having to manually track which piece of software has received an update is something that I really, really don't want to do. Until such a version of the client appears, no games from GoG.

If GOG galaxy is optional and the mindset here is "DRM free" I don't see any good reasons to keep it closed source. ( other than dirty code? ;) ) If kept in a public repository it would allow users to contribute improvements and fixes.

Added my vote to this, as it is very clear GOG is not serious about their Linux users in any way, shape, or form, and no real intent on actually to even start to work on a client. If your developers are not able to make a client - why no let us do it. Serious +1 on this vote.

ah damned - how can i revoke my vote? <br /> the reason is not that im a big fan of open source - but just think of steam client would publish parts of code - a nightmare! ;-) <br /> though gog has no marketplace - but if and however the client development progress, you dont want to open any part of it to be manipulate/copyable! ;-) <br /> (it needs features impplemented by the dev, not the community! - though they can add ways to add stuff like custom skins - but options like "hide button xyz" should be only implemented by them!^^)

itch.io's desktop client is open source, and I work for GitLab, a company who's products are entirely open source. We're proof that a company can open source their products and still be profitable! Please consider this, I would be incredibly happy to be a GOG customer if this happened.

I think it's quite telling that they're not making this open source. So much for freedom. They're seeing their userbase as a honeypot to lockdown. The only reason they wouldn't make galaxy open source is for financial reasons with the wish to restrict... same ole same ole. Happened with valve. The deisgn of galaxy doesn't really compliment being offline as much as steam does ironically. There's no non-gog games addable and no real reason to add them even if there was. Galaxy really needs to become better as a game manager rather than just a gog game manager. This would happen faster if it was open source.

Open sourcing could lead to quicker & safer feature development, best support of many configurations (including linux), and having the gog client distributed on most of linux distributions (not only few of them) as any package. <br /> Open sourcing should not come alone: a licence allowing people to develop and redistribute their patchs is necessary. <br /> If this is done right, it will be absolutely awesome !

At first I had mixed feelings, but I think opening the source code of Galaxy would be a great idea. I wouldn't probably use any git-versions of Galaxy, because I wouldn't trust my account details to any unofficial party. I find the people who say things like: "I can't get viruses, I use Linux" and "It's open source, someone has read the code, no probs" quite negligent. But even if I wouldn't use those parallel versions of Galaxy, it could (if CD Projekt wanted so) benefit greatly the development of official version. <br /> <br /> Still, it's another question when would the publishing of the source be sensible. Galaxy isn't really yet on a solid basis and the "soon" of the Linux client seems to be as far as ever. So publishing the source in a short interval wouldn't be sensible.

@fatalfuuu: I'm a full-time Linux user and haven't run Windows on my main PC (outside of <a href="http://modern.ie" class="light_un" target="_blank">modern.ie</a> testing VMs) since 2004. I say "what common wisdom would call a niche desire" because "everybody knows" that few people care about their software being open-source and those that do are too rabid about it to play closed-source games.

Not sure if the "niche desire" is sarcasm or not. <br /> <br /> It's not just for peoples piece of mind, there are lots of small features I could implment if I had access - but instead we have to put a request in for it - which is in part okay but they do have a work load afterall and time is money for them, it isn't for us (sort of).

DRM-free and open source go hand in hand as they both emphasise and help ensure user freedom. It seems hypocritical to me for a company that so heavily advocates DRM-free software to ignore other important user freedoms. I can't think of a conceivable reason not to open-source Galaxy, unless they plan to add something they want to hide from the users (tracking, etc.). I personally won't use Galaxy until the source code is released. Bonus points if it's under a free software license like GPL or MIT.

I don't want GOG Galaxy opensourced just for religional reason, but more for practical reason, since there are no restrictions on modifying or creating alternatives of the client, it is easier to modify an existing codebase than reinventing the wheel. btw. I'm not a fan of BSD-style licenses.

Making the Galaxy client open-source would exemplify the same principles that GOG has in making its games DRM-free. I for one would support such an endeavour.

This needs to happen so the community can remove social media plugins and tracking from the client.

The open source mindset goes hand in hand with GOG's DRM-free policies. Give us an API and an open source client, please please please. <br /> <br /> (lol and then someone will make a plugin for SteamOS somehow)

Nuiofrd: That's called a pull request, and it's pretty commonplace in the open source world. :) <br /> <br /> However, it's good to realize that modern games often encompass multiple million lines of code, so it's questionable if a random guy can collaborate anything useful. Even Doom 3 is out there with the source code, but people have not done that much with it. It's hard work. <br /> <br /> I think players would still appreciate more just a good modding API with tools and documentation.

They could do something similar to unreal with the next unreal tournament they are making. They have a github with the most current sources and then you just make a branch and submit your changes after they are complete then they will evaluate their validity and reliability.

It speaks very highly of the GOG userbase that only "Add Friends via Username or Email Address" and "Pause Download Capability" are more highly voted than this. <br /> <br /> After all, if it were open-source, most of these things would be easy for a skilled and motivated community member to fix in an afternoon or two.

@CoecoenutDream: <br /> I don't confound. Chromium isn't 100% free, see Parabola blacklist: <a href="https://projects.parabola.nu/blacklist.git/plain/blacklist.txt" class="light_un" target="_blank">https://projects.parabola.nu/blacklist.git/plain/blacklist.txt</a> You can also find topics about Chromium in Trisquel forum. <br /> <br /> If somebody will open a topic in forum to continue this conversation, please give me a link too.

@LADAYA: <br /> If you run in problems installing or configuring Debian, just open a new topic in the forum (or elsewhere) and pm me the link. But the newer versions of xserver are quite high developed and run out of the box in most cases. Can you provide any further information about your resolution problem? <br /> Debian is 100% free software - even if it uses Chromium, which is running under the BSD license. Don't confound with Chrome - it's not the same! <br /> I think the problem between FSF and Debian is that it's quite easy to enable nonfree software. Just extend your sources.list by "contrib" and "non-free" and you are done. But I don't think that this is a problem, since lots of users are forced to enable them - so why making their lives harder? <br /> And yes, Debian is not that "foolproof" as Ubuntu, but it is not hard to start with if YOU really want to merge (e.g. from Apple or M$). And in contrast to *buntu, it's rock solid, since the used software is being tested a long time until it is released. This is also the reason for the high use on servers. And if you want newer software you can always use the backports or jump to testing which is about as stable as Ubuntu but a rolling release. <br /> To apt vs aptitude: <br /> There is no better or worse imho. aptitude is quite smart by solving dependency problems, but in most cases you shouldn't run in them - in particular if you are only using free software. But I heard (not experienced!) it could "brick" your system. apt is also very mighty, but whatever you take: decide for ONE of them, because mixing them will get you in trouble if you have a problem and need to search your logfiles, since both tools create their own logs. <br /> <br /> I hope that GOG will make Galaxy FOSS, there are no disadvantagess for them and in fact the step could be used as advertising for how much GOG cares about.

Open sourcing it would also make it impossible to covertly force any kinds of dependencies with the client and a game in the future, so that would be extremely good. Never going to happen because of that, of course.

@LADAYA: <br /> I was talking about Ubuntu Software Center. By "local package installing" I meant an installing of .deb package not from repository. Ubuntu Software Center can do this, but it just executes something like "dpkg -i filename.deb", so if dependencies were not resolved you need to open terminal and run "apt-get install -f". That's what I meant. <br /> GDebi doesn't have this disadvantage, but Ubuntu doesn't contain this program out of the box. <br /> Aptitude is really better than apt-get. It resolves dependencies better, offers not only one solution in conflict situations and has pseudo-graphic interface (just type "aptitude" in terminal and you'll see it). But... After Pacman (package management system in Arch/Manjaro/Parabola) I can't comfortably use something else. Pacman installs packages with the light speed, it's very simple but powerful program. That's why I use Parabola. :) <br /> Firefox addons in Mint? Hmm, I installed LMDE a week ago and I didn't have Firefox addons preinstalled. But yes, there is some garbage. Fortunately, not so much as in Manjaro. <br /> I never had an ATI/AMD videocard, but people say these cards don't work well in GNU/Linux. I hope you'll find a solution.

@LADAYA: <br /> <br /> &gt;&gt; Is it true Debian doesn't support PPA? <br /> <br /> You can add PPA in Debian, but it is a bit harder than in Ubuntu, not by just using one command. Also some apps from PPA may not work because of other versions of dependent packages. <br /> <br /> &gt;&gt; Debian is 100% free too, am I right? But it offers non-free packages in repositories, that's why FSF won't recommend it. <br /> <br /> I'm not sure that Debian is absolutely free. Chromium browser is not 100% free, it's removed from Trisquel and Parabola, but you can find it in the main Debian repository. So, some others non-100% free packages may also exist there. <br /> <br /> &gt;&gt; Yet again, I'm not allowed to max my resolution without binary blobs. <br /> <br /> Try this to fix your problem: <a href="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Adding_undetected_resolutions" class="light_un" target="_blank">https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution#Adding_undetected_resolutions</a> But it'll be better if you'll say what type of videocard you have. <br /> <br /> &gt;&gt; I don't mind non-free games that much, I take games a little differently than other software. <br /> <br /> In my opinion, games are not only the software, it's an art. I agree with you that games may be non-100% free, but when users can read the code, they can help developers to find and fix bugs (Linus's Law). It can be very helpful for indie developers. Also I think that a possibility to copy a game isn't dangerous for business, it's just something like a permission for "pirating", and this will not change anything in relationships of developers and players. So, well, I really hope that someday games also will be free as in freedom. :) <br /> <br /> &gt;&gt; They are fooled by the marketing and all the hype around it. <br /> <br /> I think it's also true for Ubuntu. Maybe some years ago it really was the "Debian with human face", but what do we have today? Programs crash without reason (I don't know why, this problem exists in all Ubuntu-based distros), heavy software center that can't resolve dependencies at local package installing, and Unity sends users' data to Amazon, which is well known as the company that uses DRM. Great! No quality, no respect to the users, no promotions of FLOSS! But unfortunately Ubuntu is still on the 2nd place by popularity. I don't want to support Canonical, I think now it's like cancer in GNU/Linux world. <br /> <br /> IMHO, if user doesn't want or can't use only free software, Linux Mint Debian Edition, Fedora and, perhaps, Manjaro are not so bad alternatives for Ubuntu, they are enough user-friendly. <br /> <br /> &gt;&gt; And I also heard that the free/open source Intel drivers are best, because they are done by Intel. Is that true? <br /> <br /> It's true that drivers are done by Intel. But I can't say that Intel GPUs are the best choice for GNU/Linux gaming. On my desktop with Nvidia GeForce 8600GTS and Nouveau driver most games work a little better than on my laptop with Intel HD 4000. I hope that Intel HD 5000 and newer GPUs are much powerful.

"Don't know about you, but having proprietary software on GNU/Linux feels like I'm having something potentially malicious on it. :P (and it is)." <br /> <br /> I agree, even though I game on Linux, I used to switch out the proprietary Nvidia for Nouveau on my old computer. On the laptop I'm using, I just have the open source Intel graphics drivers. <br /> I'm looking forward to the day where the trade secrets way of getting ahead in the market isn't holding up. Where companies have to come up with truly innovative ideas to get ahead. <br /> Well, even better, there should be a revolution in modular ARM computers, with everything GPL licensed. As most innovation is done by small players in the market anyways. Accumulation of money after a certain point doesn't seem to help much.
