LAN GAMING via Internet (Hamachi-like VLAN in Galaxy--especially for older games)
Please don't add this such a bad idea security wise.
In the meantime, we all can use Zerotier. www.zerotier.com/
Something like Wireguard built in would be great, can exchange keys and do hole punching behind the scenes and just offer a "Join Session" button in the friends UI.
Integrating a lan emulator into galaxy could be really nice, as long as it doesn't lock you from using other lan emulators, of course, that's the poing of gog, to not actually need the launcher.
Basically, integrate hamachi to the gog client.
I second this. Don't let LAN parties die!!
We need it urgently. It would be a killer.
There is multiple programs to make 'direct connections',
but for public gaming (with list of online servers/rooms, to play not only with known friends). currently is only pLan (.. OpenVpn) and gameRanger, gameRanger currently has disadvantages like game auto{starting/closing}, rooms auto-locking, players limit equal to 1 ingame-server's max, and strict game executable selection, pLan needs players a lot, please gamers, joing us to play together.
Nah, keep it light weight. There is software for that e.g. Gameranger
If anyone really needs LAN gaming over the internet I'd recommend using ZeroTier. After Tunngle shut down our LAN group switched to this and after some trial and error we got it working perfectly. It's not made for public LAN gaming like Tunngle was but it should work great for LAN in a group.
From what I've gathered it's open source and cross platform.
Tunngle is shutting down due to the GDPR, Hamachi just doesn't work half the time, Evolve looks like an overbloated mess, please just do this already.
I really want this.
Something like this would definitely resurrect online multiplayer for older games, especially DOS games. I would love to play Blood and Rise of the Triad online again.
This is something I need!
Building that kind of Evolve/Hamachi support into Galaxy would be a killer feature. It would provide a "blessed" solution to this problem, and rally a community around a single service. Building into Galaxy would provide opportunity to significantly streamline the process, and greatly expand the audience of people who would play these kinds of games MP.
For playing multi in neverwinter nights, it would be the must have.
yeah, this would definitely help for games like doom, quake and all the old fps shooters like unreal.
I think GOG + Gameranger would be about perfect for it. They do all the old classics you cant play anymore. Cheers.
This would be super awesome!
This would be awesome. People saying they don't know if it's possible, you do know there's Hamachi and Evolve that already offer this? Evolve even has Xbox style parties etc. Sad so few people seem to use it.
Seems hugely out of scope for the project. Would be cool though.
To enabling playing Alpha Centauri through Galaxy would really be a cultural achievement.
This would be huge. If GOG servers "connected the dots" (IP dots) and let you host a secure VPN to which you could invite friends through Galaxy, I think it would dramatically boost the number of users. You could set it up such that the VPN is all peer to peer... only the initial setup would require connection to the Galaxy servers since the average joe won't want to figure out his public IP address.
People could connect without needing to be an internet expert AND none of the game traffic would take place on the Galaxy servers.
Ugh. My mind skipped over part of one of the sentences.
"DOSBox already uses IPX" should be "DOSBox already uses UDP for its IPX"
@5t0n3: Use UDP-based NAT traversal like Skype.
All clients send a "Here I am!" message to a GOG server. The router opens a random UDP port automatically to receive replies and, because it's UDP rather than TCP, there's no sequencing.
That means that the server can then give client B the reply address from client A and then they communicate directly with no reconfiguring.
DOSBox already uses IPX and supports multiple -conf arguments, so all it would require is for Galaxy to:
1. Do the NAT traversal handshake
2. Let go of the socket (since UDP is connectionless, expiring NAT table entries is done via timeout rather than explicit connection closing)
3. Dynamically generate custom dosbox.conf stubs to run the appropriate ipxnet commands.
4. Run something like `dosbox -conf base_game_conf -conf ipxnet_conf -conf autoexec_lines_to_actually_start_the_game`
I do like the idea, but I would'nt like it as a built in option of Galaxy. If there would be a separated GUI f.ex. for tinc, it would be more stable and secure.
Otherwise there have to be solved the handshake problem, noone of us want or can do changes in the router settings. But there have to be an open TCP-Port other wise no tunneling can work.
For this a handshake server is needed and have to be separated from any other GOG-service to protec them. Even if a program like tinc will be used, that's a hell of work and trouble.
DOSBox supports IPX over TCP IP with the ipx=true in the dosbox conf file
an function to use the multiplayer for older gog games with the gog client alone would be nice
This feature is a potential security treat and will increase the burden of the GOG team, you can fire up yout OpenVPN client without GOG's help.
I still remember being able to shutdown computer of other players in Hamachi, it was fun to me, not to them :)
I fear their may be too many security risks involved with a service like this.
Though, if they pulled something off. It would bring about an age where Valve actually has a competitor to worry about. Nostalgia junkies would be all over this. Imagine, LAN parties without being there. Not internet multiplayer crap, but the real deal!
@property_live But they could probably create a p2p infrastructure for this (with something like ZeroTier or n2n) to minimize workload.
well that would be a killer-feature for gog-galaxy ;-)
But I guess GOG doesn't have the server power for that ...
Regarding LAN option this is very very possible. CD Projekt could partner with EvolveHQ to port their tech in it. I know the founders since the platform started and they are really cool about supporting old games or any games with LAN play. It works wonderfully . Oh and it has video recording too!
I would download galaxy if it would let me replay the classic games how they should be played with an actual second player :D
This would be very nice!
I don't know if this is even possible, but if they make it true... Tears of happiness <3
Perhaps Galaxy could act as a front-end to something like ZeroTier.
This would make the client worth paying for
This would be so epic. Playing old games online with friends. Uber.

Hmm Built in Working LAN like Tunngle/Hamachi? I`M IN!!
This would be great!
I can imagine this being the main reason to get masses interested in Galaxy.
very good
this would be awesome 8D
Yes, this would make GameRanger and Hamachi users join Galaxy to play their favorite games, please do it! We want to play Heroes 3 etc again!
Galaxy VLAN would be great. When internet servers are shut downing fast, a lot of old games still support LAN. Super idea.
If THIS gets added, Steam will be replaced as my favourite Platform IMMEDIATELY with the then far superior Galaxy
This would be amazing! There are already alternatives like Tunngle and Evolve, but Galaxy would be an awesome way to do it since I often play older games that need LAN through GOG anyway.
Don't know why nobody has implemented this yet (looking at you steam), this would be a great addition to Galaxy
