If you manage to look at this game beyond its dated graphics and its little faults (fights already felt awkward in 95), you will find a fabulous adventure with a romantic plot and a very interesting system of moral assessment of your deeds. Everything is well-balanced. The difficulty is great, I finished this game without cheating, which is rare. The characters you will meet are colourful and there are no pages and pages of talking. The settings to explore are nice and varied, with a magnificent castle. The different atmospheres are beautifully rendered thanks to a huge work on sound effects. Actually, this game is amongst the first generation of games using the CD-Rom technology and it fully benefitted from it. This game was very innovative in many respects. I can still remember the introduction and the main theme. One of the games that left me the strongest impression ever.
Awesome action/adventure game with a good plot, interesting environments to explore and, above all, a unique and incredible atmosphere. The game is also well-made, with a stunning soundtrack. In 99, this game was amongst those that justified buying a powerful video card. It looked impressive with fine textures and great lighting effects (liquids look fantastic). The abilities of the character increase, which makes the experience exciting. Make sure to print the map and use it (take notes). If you do not know where to go, you will rapidly get stuck and bored by the toing and froing because enemies respawn. Platforms parts make for a good gameplay. If I had to find one flaw: there is too much shooting.
This is one of the most ambitious games ever created, and in many respects it was impressive for 1999! I thought it would inspire many developers but years after its relese, it somehow remains unique and unrivalled. Even amongst other Quantic Dream productions, this is the masterpiece. Of course, the game has some flaws. Gameplay elements borrowed from other genres, shooting and fighting scenes are rather awkward and boring, for example. Hopefully, they are rare and short. Some aspects of the storytelling like the "it's not a game" can sound ridiculous. The major flaw of the game was its unstability on modern systems, and Gog has corrected it. The ambiance is awesome, the universe to discover is incredible. Playing this game is as exotic and relaxing as travelling abroad. I give it 5 stars without hesitating. A game to (re-)discover, please do not miss it!
It's just that the videogame industry is pitiless. There's no room for second place. Settings are varied as the action is set in different times from Antiquity to the future. The first enemy you encounter is a toad, which sets the tone of a somewhat unvoluntarily funny FPS. I liked this game in some strange way, I did not enjoy it less than its contemporaries. I think it's worth trying for one's culture. At $50, I would understand your disappointment. At $6, there's nothing to say.
No complicated space fighting simulator here, this game is an arcade shooter. The fighter is easy to pilot, it handles with only a few keys (the game is playable with a keyboard). There is no gravity, the fighter never stalls. Levels are not complicated like Descent's, they are mostly set outdoors, which is more enjoyable, I think. And settings are varied. I never liked Descent, it feels too claustrophobic. When indoors in TV, the levels are mere tunnels. TV is a shooter in 3 dimensions with a great soundtrack, much action and some levels and enemies inspired by Star Wars. The action is quite repetitive so you will not play long, but it is so fun you will play often.
This game attracted me because it uses the same engine as Duke Nukem 3D so it looked like the latter. One might expect some kind of DN3D among rednecks, but the game does not come close to DN3D. I can play DN3D again and again without getting bored whereas I never managed to go through more than 1 or 2 levels in Redneck Rampage. Firstly, I hate the level design. Corridors in the countryside look unnatural, stupid and too directive. Secondly, the setting lacks variety, the universe of rednecks is not enough interesting to foster a whole game. I think this game should have been a level, an episode or a small addon for DN3D, not an entire game. Bought it again on Gog, got bored rapidly again, uninstalled it with finishing it again...
Powerslide has the atmosphere of Pod with improved graphics. Levels are truly awesome and the music is fantastic, with tracks featuring didgeridoo. But beware, the game is aptily named: cars slide a lot. You feel like driving a piece of soap on ice, cars are hard to handle, which, in my opinion, makes racing annoying and frustrating. The gameplay would have been totally different with a little more grip. If you get bored, do not hesitate to look at the cheats to unlock all bonuses and tracks. I did not find this game fun to play but it was so beautiful that I always came back to it.
I kept a good souvenir from trying out the shareware version because the game offered instant fun, it felt very accessible and more arcade than I76. Now that I have played the entire game, I understand why it had so little success. Graphics are really bad for a 1999 game. Physics engine will not make you feel like stunting on the hills like in Carmageddon. On the contrary, you will be extremely careful because bugs can drive you into obstacles and damage your car. Sounds are rather bad, especially voices. Once outside the car, the gameplay gets even worse. Watch ingame videos to make up your mind.
The story is beautiful and well-narrated, but that is all this game is: a story. That is not much, undoubtedly not enough to make a game and surely not enough to justify more than 2 or 3$. This game could have been a masterpiece with a true interface, more to do, more to discover by oneself and more to explore... Instead of that, the player plays a totally passive role, you are spectator, which is rather frustrating. The gameplay is an insult to intelligence: puzzles are stupid, finding links is boring and extremely repetitive. You knew the 'point-and-click' genre, this game belongs to the click genre. You only have to click again and again to read the dialogues. I do not need to click stupidly on objects to feel involved in a plot. Developers should have chosen between making a true game with a proper gameplay and making a machinima! I do not regret buying this game, I had to give it a try after reading the comments. But better be aware what you are buying.
