Horror games are not my forte. Usually only the first encounter would be scary, and any consequence encounter would be frustrating. This holds true if you need to solve puzzle while avoiding monsters at the same time. Usually this breaks the pace for me and I ended up putting the game on the back burner. Which is what I did to this game at first. However, the developer adds "safe mode" which is perfect for a guy like me. The storyline in this game is amazing enough to hold on its own. Many people bashed the developer for putting in such mode, but they don't realize that this opens up possibility for other players to enjoy this game without being frustrated by the horror element of the game. Much can't be said without spoiling the content of the game, other than the facts that this game has amazing atmospheric and thought-provoking world built around several philosophies about human nature. The puzzle can be infuriating sometimes, but never enough to detract you from the main experience. Last but not least, well done Frictional Games. This game didn't get enough recognition that it deserved.
