Agatha Christie - The ABC Murders

Falls short

I was a bit disappointed by this game. It way too easy and at some point I started wondering why each house had it's own mini puzzle to hide some items. It's not really an adventure game, more like something you'd play on iPad or something. I've seen the story on TV multiple times before playing so I already knew how the plot goes. There's not much to do in the entire game, all places have only a few hotspots and there are only a few usable objects. Every time you click somewhere the upper area of the screen blinks for like ten times that now you've unlocked and achievement here and there. Please...there are tens and hundreds of better adventure games, even the tedious And Then There Were None is much better in comparison to this, in terms of actual gameplay.

Better than I could remember.

I had this game when 3dfx Voodoo 1 was the best 3D accelerator you could buy. Back then, I only played using the keyboard and didn't get very far with this game. Today, of course I am using the mouse and keyboard and the controls are perfect. I think the controls were a bit clunky in the original release but really are perfect in this. Very fun gameplay and great atmosphere. Usually I buy GoG games just to test some old games I missed and often don't really play them unless I have plenty of extra time. I ended up getting hooked on this and just waiting to play some more. The graphics are nothing of today's standards but exactly how I remember them to be, so why complain. To the bad, I never liked the checkpoint/save system of this game and finding keys in the maps. It would have worked better without hunting the keys to proceed. For they price GoG is asking this is not worth getting but surely is when the price comes down a bit.

Interesting but frustrating

I have to say, it's been a long time when I was this angry with a game, especially an adventure game. I have played adventure games since Larry 1. The game feels interesting, but there is absolutely nothing much to do or click but the hotspots that mean something. The puzzles are poorly designed and mostly frustrating or annoying because of wrong reasons. The puzzles act as a real show stopper in this game. For example the lock picking is pure annoyance which took me 4 hours to beat. Another puzzle leaves you thinking, why in the world the clues are not clear and leaves you with tens of possible solutions? In the end you will think why your solution was wrong and theirs right? It might be just that I think too completely in this game, where the developers have designed the puzzles on a coffee break. I laughed so much after playing through the dull scenes and then a breathtaking cutscene would be shown. Right after that you'll need to solve another stupid puzzle. The pace is just wrong in this game.
