When Assassin's Creed first came out, it broke new ground integrating unique parkour-style action with a beautiful rendition of the Near East during the Crusades. In some ways, the first Assassin's Creed plays more like a proof-of-concept, with a lot of repetition in combat and tedious gameplay dynamics that were smoothed out later in the series. For anyone interested in medieval Syria and Palestine, this game is a must-have. Despite occasional rough patches in the gameplay, the loving attention to detail in both architecture and historical atmosphere make Assassin's Creed shine.
