The clunkiness of this game makes it unplayable. Locking onto opponents to engage them in combat wouldn't be so bad if it was so inconsistent, often your character just starts swinging at air after a sidestep and this system becomes a nightmare when you're fighting more than one opponent at a time. It's a shame because movement outside of combat was surprisingly smooth.
