It is definitely with a warm heart to say that it's about damn time that Sin is on Gog. Sin is a ID tech 2 engine game (Modified) by Ritual entertainment which sadly fell to the wayside in terms of exposure, which to those who actually played this game, probably wondered why exactly it didn't get the recognition it deserved...well I'll tell you what happened, Half-Life happened! Literally 2 weeks after Sin's release, Half-Life was unleashed onto the masses, becoming the must have fps at the time, which is sorta unfortunate. Not to say Half-life didn't deserve it, but the gameplay of HL, definitely doesn't come close to Sin. Sin is definitely the more "fun" game by a country mile. While Half-Life did have a pretty unique gameplay style, favoring Atmosphere and more cinematic style of story telling, while feeling like you are taking place in that story, Sin was the counter opposite, favoring more fun gameplay action rather than story. Basically to sum up this review, here's a bullet point list of what to expect when buying this game: -Fast and fun Gameplay. -Good body hit detection mechanic. -Gibs. -Funny dialogue and delivery of lines. -Interaction with the environment. -certain objectives that change how certain levels play out later on. -and of course, a hell of a good time. Buy it!
You know, it kinda bugs me that people are even comparing this game to Dark Souls, cause when you get down to the nitty-gritty details of both games, Severance: Blade of Darkness isn't even the same type of animal as Dark Souls...so to end this rant, Dark Souls is an rpg game with hack n' slash elements, and Severance: Blade of Darkness is a hack n' slash with minor rpg elements...there rant over, now onto my Review...IT IS AWESOME! Now seriously, this is probably one of the more complex Hack n Slash games that I've played. Instead of it being a button masher where you just hack away at things, this is a game where you need to study your enemy, and know when to strike, to put this into perspective, regular button mashing Hack n' Slashers (like say Devil May Cry) is a snack food, simple, plain, and to the point. Whereas B.O.D. is a high class dessert that makes your taste buds savor all the richness and complexity of what you are eating, and requires you to take your time eating it rather than slamming it down like a pig! But yeah, when people say it difficult, it is difficult for all the right reasons! This isn't a game that will cut you slack for not studying up for your English test, this game will kick you in the Fuckin' Ass if you aren't prepared and aren't willing to learn the game! It's a game that makes you want to learn the game so you can master the game, rather than the game mastering you! Get this game!
Growing up, I didn't have a mega PC that I do now, so back in 2004, playing anything that would want to light a weak performing computer on fire, blow it up with C4, and then Field Goal it out the window, was just out of the question. But thanks to the Internet, and places like Ebay, Amazon, Steam, and of course, GOG, getting this game is not so hard to do, and now that I do have a well performing pc, I thought "eh, why not pick this game up". Anyway, Painkiller, needless to say, in no other terms imaginable is simply "A DAMN JOLLY GOOD TIME THAT WILL BLOW YOU BALLS OFF!" Considering how modern Fps's today try so hard to Rip off C.O.D. and replicate a very linear experience to DEATH! It is definitely a breath of fresh air to play something that feels like what an Fps should be. Just the Joy of Jumping around like a lunatic and Shooting Stakes through monsters face, hanging them on a wall like a Davinci painting never get's old. One thing that always sticks with me when I play this game is the complete feeling of catharsis. Just being able to play this game for hours and not get bored, is a very good thing. Sure the AI isn't perfect, Sure there aren't a whole lot of weapons, sure the Graphics.......well actually the Graphics are still Damn good! ^_^ But my point is, sure it's not exactly perfect, all games are flawed...but unlike most FPS games today, that are pumped out by the soulless companies that pump these out to feed the idiotic masses that believe Call a duty is "ultra realistic, and very deep!" You can feel all the heart, soul, blood, and tears that was put into this Gem of a game! Seriously, do yourself a favor, and stop reading this review, and by Painkiller Black! Trust me, you'll thank me later. Any game that gives you a gun that Shoots shurikens and Lighting, is a game that deserves your attention...NOW!!
In an age where the First person shooter Genre has advanced considerably and games like Battlefield 3 and Call of duty Modern Warfare 3 fight for the throne, as good as they are, they all lack a certain something that I don't seem to see that much in games anymore, including the the modern fps. So for awhile I was looking for an old Fps that had a feeling to it that not much of the other games of today had...Character. So in my midst of searching I played games Like Quake, Quake 2, Blood 1+2, Red Faction, and I loved them all, and still do. But there was one I missed... So while looking up fps's, I came across unreal tournament, and the other games, and watched videos talking about them...but I didn't hear much about the one that started it all. Unreal. So I picked up the Unreal Anthology, so I could play this one...and was very pleased. I found the game I should've had the luck to play back in the day, but didn't, and as a 20 year old, this is one fine game. It has a lot of things that make it unique. Unique enemies, unique levels, unique weapons, unique characters, and unique gameplay. Overall, Unreal, is Unique. There are not many games like it that have the style and character that many fps's do nowadays, and it does sadden me a bit. So if everything you've read up to this point doesn't convince you. Let me say something that will influence you to buy it...what other games can you say that you can be a zombie walking around with a gun that shoots Crystals at innocent four armed people that can float with the POWA of meditation? ...nuff said.
