This game is amazing on so many levels from sound design to visuals to storytelling to character engagements to in-game music score. Set in a time period close to Ragnarok your charcter Senua of the Picts tribe sets out to recover her lover Dillion's soul from Helheim. But to even enter the gate to Helheim she must face challenges. Thus begins her quest to challenge the god of Helheim and attempt to slay her. The runes are striking. Everything is striking. I could not get over just how beautiful and lifelike the ocean physics was. I haven't seen such amazing water physics since 'Submerged'. There is no onscreen HUD or health meters to get in your way. It doesn't hand hold. Study the controls menu and you will do fine. The combat is unbelievably satisfying. It's like they studied Shadversity swordplay videos to create such a visceral experience. The villains are varied and compelling. The depiction of Hela and Fenris are unique. The multiple voices that constantly surround you is so unique. You get a very good idea of what it means to have a shattered mind. I played the game twice on Hard and on the third play through on Easy. But in a strange twist I did worse on Easy than I did on Hard. Fenris seemed a lot tougher and unpredicatable on Easy mode. I got PsyOped by the developers methinks. I experienced zero bugs in this game, ZERO. It runs effortlessly at maximum settings and is very fluid. It also showcases the full capabilities of the Unreal engine. So many colors and so many layers. Also watch the making of video that comes with the game. It's very enlightening and shows what they were aiming for with this study in madness. I highly recommend experiencing this game a couple of times.
Contrary to what some have said this game WILL blow you away. Anytime you get pounced on by multiple targets the chances are you will get blown away if your ride isn''t able to handle the assault. Which is fine! Because it can always be repaired. The explosions are glorious. The vistas are breathtaking and the NPCs are a very interesting cast of characters. The musical score is beautiful so it's a shame no isolated soundtrack is available with the game. There are a lot of hidden entrances peppered throughout the landscapes and the map area is massive. You don't realize just how massive until you have to travel on foot. It's great to see Max's friend from 'Road Warrior' in the game as well. One of the coolest features in the game are the sandstorms and electrical storms (no rain). Sometimes when you least expect it they can actually complete a mission for you (petrol and electrical sparks don't mix ). They can also mess you up bad if you get caught in them so find shelter. I originally got 'Mad Max' as a free game in a bundle with 'Tomb Raider' when I bought the XFX Radeon 7870 HD Ghost Edition and it turned out to be an awesome thing. I'm glad it's now on GOG DRM free since I have my saves back up off of STEAM. I have never played a more perfect game that doesn't have water in it. Yes please, bring all the Borderlands games over next.
It's a trap! But seriously I played this back in 2001 after finding a boxed copy. I was running Windows 98SE back then. This game was such an amaaaazing experience with a Gravis joystick. What was esqually amazing about the game was how easy it was to replace the audio files with your own! I added audio pulled from the Star Wars THX video tapes and replaced the in-game sound FX and pilot chatter. The Millenium Falcon audio tracks were taken straight out of my VHS copy of 'Return of the Jedi' THX (Faces box set). It was awesome to hear Billie Dee Williams and Nien Numb as you flew through the Death Star and to hear Wedge Antilles saying he was already on his way out. I do not own 'X-Wing Alliance' on GOG yet (maybe now) but I can attest that this is one hell of a space flight game. The level with wave after wave of Tie-fighters is simply breathtaking.
