EPIC + Inferno Bundle

Battlestar Galactica 16-bit style

This is about Epic. I still remember the awe I felt the first time I ran the game on my Atari ST when the game was released. The intro and gameplay graphics were like nothing seen before, at least 3D style, at least outside Digital Image Design's previous games. I don't know if they used the same engine or not, but the style was definitely very similar and very impressive. It's a game very similar in gameplay to the first two Wing Commander games and with a story taken out of the original Galactica. At the time this game was the closest to a game version of the original (and only by that time) TV series. Missions are of what you would expect from the genre. Graphics were fantastic for the time and so was sound. The control of the craft was good and overall it was a fun game. The intro was great and I recommend letting it play at least once, though as I mentioned that was for the Atari ST version, I haven't played yet the PC version. But I will as I plan on buying it tonight. Good game.

Blade Runner

Blade Runner

You are a Blade Runner. It's a point and click adventure game with limited action sequences where with the mouse you can aim and shoot potential targets, IF you want to. Not only NPCs react differently and have different development depending on how you interact with them (also shooting them), but whenever you start a new game, you don't know who is a replicant (humanoid android) and how isn't. This way you have to do some proper good investigation to find out. It took many years for a licensed game to come out and at the time it could have been anything. A shooter most likely, or some 3D game of the sort that looked good in the late 90s and terrible 2 years later. But not this time. They made this a proper "detective" work, a proper Blade Runner work to go out, investigate and be a Blade Runner yourself. The game is great, both as a point and click adventure game and as a movie adaptation. If you love Blade Runner, this is a must. If you at least semi enjoy adventure games, this is a must. I have the original discs (the rest are long gone) when I bought the game the first time, then a couple of years ago I re-bought the physical version because I wanted to have the whole thing. As soon as I saw this version here, I bought it within a couple of minutes. One of the best games ever made.

Shady

I have nothing bad to say about the quality of this release. Not even for the IMO absurd pricing. But since we are not any input on the shady of shady moves, I will post it here. Removing 2 MS-DOS games which were perhaps reasonably priced, to replace them with 2 (plus 2) emulated (or not depending on the version) versions of DIFFERENT systems...now that's just a nasty move. Why don't we have the option to buy the original MS-DOS versions of these games? Why are we forced to buy different versions from the one we want to play? It can't possibly be because of the spike in the price, so, what is it? Why were the originals removed? Despicable.

Avoid

It can take anything from a couple of turns to far more, keyboard strikes no longer work. Mouse works only to access main menus and not unit menus or unit movements. I have to quit the game, re start it and load to be able to continue properly. And that is for few more turns till the problem appears again. With that in mind I graciously give the game 1.5/5. If I had no problems then I would give it at least one to two more stars, if not more if I got to enjoy the game more by playing it more. The game is a strategy game, similar on the surface to Civilization or Rise and Rule of Ancient Empires. It is a solid strategy game in Ancient Empires clothing/skin. In that regard it reminds me also of Empire 2. You can pick map (real or not) and grow your empire. There is diplomacy though it has a very skin deep feel to it. Everybody hates you from the get go. You can build buildings, order armies, research techs. All is good. Not perfect, but good. I can see how this game can be great to some. Just be aware that RTW or even RRoAE this is not. Having said that, since the game breaks every few turns, I can't recommend it. I wish I could.

Very good but not great

I played this game for my channel and enjoyed it very much. It's a modern day third person military shooter, with a strong (for the genre) story. Shooting mechanics is done very well and there are some great set pieces. Impressive graphics and overall fun game. I highly recommend it. Having said that, there are a couple of things which don't let this game reach great status. Without spoilers, there is a gap in the story and how it is handled that annoyed me. Also there is one type of enemy which just shouldn't be in this type of game. Thankfully this type only appears a handful of times, but still it makes no sense. I am talking about the variety of super armored enemy. When otherwise everything remains in the realistic level. Not enough to ruin the game, but for me at least, enough to take one star out of it, together with the thing about the story. I bought and completed the game some time ago (before it appeared on GOG) and I highly recommend it. It's a fun fun game. Duration of single play playthrough I would say under 8 hours if you are a better than average player in shooting games. A few more hours if you are not very good at shooting games. If you want to have a look here is the link to my let's play. Though don't watch too much if you don't want any spoilers and definitely avoid the last few episodes. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLtpqh8ebqvxc3xtwENBHtmqNIyIEc0yrQ

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30™

A great HARD tactical FPS

Set in WWII, this FPS will give you plenty of chances to share your feelings with deities or with the son of someone's mother. The game is hard. Not entirely due to built in difficulty, but because it requires a total different mindset to any other FPS released till then (or since then). Calling this game just a FPS is like calling Gran Turismo a kart racing game. You will not be able to play and finish this game if you try to play like a lone wolf. AFAIK it can't be done. You will need to use tactics. You will need to command your troops (easy to do in game) to flank or suppress enemy positions. If you try to do it on your own you will have your character die and "stuck" in the same mission for ever. The game gives you the tools by use of easy commands (aim on the enemy position and choose the command) to have your troops help you. You can do this either in the first person view, aiming the enemy position and picking the right command, or by using the in game tactical map, pressing a key to bring the map and then from a top down view give the command. Not that you can just give orders and not dirty your hands. Oh no, you will have to do most of the shooting yourself. Shooting which is satisfying. The campaign is long and gritty. The game is fun. This is the thinking man's FPS, without becoming a (personal opinion) borefest of the first few Rainbow Six games where you felt you were doing more planning than shooting. This is the first game in the trilogy and it is the hardest one. Depending on how you feel about FPS games you will either love it or not so much. IF you are looking for a closer "arcade" action then get the third game. I do believe though this game is a gem and should be played by all lovers of WW2 video games. I give it a 4/5 stars.

Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered

Total Recall

For me this game above all other RF games made me feel like I was in the world of the movie Total Recall. The original with Arnold. Of course if know that movie you know that there aren't THAT many common set pieces, but whatever :p This game is a third person shooter with heavy melee part. With a variety of weapons/tools you can not just shoot the enemies as in most games, but also hit them hard. Where this gets different than other similar games is that in this game you also get to hit buildings. Destroying them. Bit by bit. If it is a building on the surface, it can be destroyed. You can destroy them by blasting them or hitting them hard. You can destroy them slowly piece by piece or you can destroy the load baring walls/columns to force them to collapse. etc. Destroying them gives you bonuses which you can use to upgrade/purchase etc. It is also part of the story. Say you have a mission to destroy thingy A or kill person B, why do it the old fashioned way and not just destroy a pillar which will make the building fall on the target? etc. Other than the lots of fun destroying of buildings, you can shoot with a variety of weapons, which all feel very good, and/or use vehicles. Anything from "jeep" type vehicle to Aliens type of Walker. The whole game oozes of quality but more importantly of fun. You enjoy destroying, doing missions, not just to reach the ending but because the gameplay at its core is FUN. I don't know if it is the best action game of its generation, but it is certainly up there with the other best.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown Complete Pack

Good game, not as good as Enemy Unknown

A reboot of the original turn based series. Aliens have arrived, you get to lead an elite human force to deal with the alien threat. Turn based CQB against aliens and some humans. When not fighting you "manage" your base of operations, which is a huge underground base. You get to build rooms, research weapons etc, and a few other things. All is done very well and I assume most of you know about this game. The game is very well made and it can be quite addictive. If you have never played the original 90s series, that's more or less enough. If you are a fan of sci-fi and turn based tactical battles, this is a great game to get. I know I will eventually get the DRM free version from GOG too. If you are a fan of the original series, talking about Enemy Unknown and its two sequels, then the game is IMO not as good for a few important reasons. 1. Dumbed down strategies. 2. The tactical maps are for the most part nothing but corridor maps, pushing you towards one direction. There is no real freedom in where to move and explore for enemy units. 3. Time limit in battles to cover for the dumbing down of the tactical part of the game. 4. Severe limit of number of units you can bring to a battle. It gets a bit better later on, but it still is nothing but a shadow of the original. For a good reason of course as the map design and overall difficulty would make it a cakewalk. 5. While there are action points, your units have always the same action points. TWO. Usually one move and one attack. Complicated moves and clever using of the AP depending on the soldier, is no more. At least not to the level of the originals. 6. In EU you had to search for the enemy, be always on the lookout, if you played good, you were rewarded. Here exploration doesn't matter as much, an area can be clear and just spawn enemies. 7. Only one base. In the originals you could build several bases and manage them accordingly. Here you can't. Ever. Review limit so I have to stop.

STAR WARS™ - The Force Unleashed™ Ultimate Sith Edition

A good game

This game is basically a new version of the previous games in the series of Star Wars games where you have a character in an action game with light RPG elements (upgrade paths). Nothing new in that regard. Some people say it is lighter, others not, it doesn't really matter as an RPG it isn't. That's not a bad thing as far as I am concerned, as long as you know what you are getting. A mostly linear action story & gameplay, set in the Star Wars universe. No one is rediscovering the wheel here. I played the game years ago almost to completion and found it a solid Star Wars game. If you are not nitpicking and if you find it at a good price, you will enjoy it. I never had any problem with the controls or the game crashing. Having said that, I played the game on Vista. I do not own Windows 10 and don't plan to, so I don't know how it runs on that. The game is not easy, with parts of it having to use powers to pass enemies. Most of the difficulty is at a reasonable level, with some spikes here and there. Nothing too bad. The reason I give this game a 3/5 and not say 4, is because while "there is nothing wrong with it", it's also not memorable at all, to me. I seriously can't remember more than a couple of parts of the game. Worth buying and playing. It's above average, it's not great.

NecroVision

A harder less refined Painkiller

A very simple (non tactical) FPS game with heavy influence from late 90s FPS and the later Painkiller fps. If Painkiller is AA game in terms of production values, this is more of a B+. Nothing wrong with that on its own. It's a very violent, simple in terms of mechanics, and very depressing FPS game. Similar to Painkiller. If you enjoyed Painkiller you will definitely not hate this one, you might even like it very much. It is hectic (heh), dark and not the type of game which will cheer you up from atmosphere. Again, very similar to Painkiller. For me it wasn't as good as that game, you will find everything a bit off compared to Painkiller, but if you give it some time you might grow to like it. For the price, if you like non tactical FPS games, it is good value.
