A faithful loveletter to the likes of Heretic and Wolfenstien, with a playful cartoony style and rewarding exploration. It could have shed some of the labyrinth-like level design of retro titles for a more modern architectural/topographical sensibility (there's some, but it more heavily leans into the hallway/maze design), and the combat is a little shallow due to simplistlc AI, abundance of ammo and clumped enemy encounters (leading to spraying). But, it's got good variation in buffs and attacks and a store mechanic, which I always appreciate. Overall it's enjoyable and a fun way to scratch the collector/completionist itch.
Especially one with a unique setting, such as this. It instantly worked with my wired XBox One controller, which is rarely the case, so that was a huge plus. Controls are okay. Roll/dodge mechanic is unique, which is nice. The feedback on dealing and getting damage is a bit too subtle, making it hard to know the difference between hitting someone and getting hurt. Overall, if you're a retro/pixelart Metroidvania fan, this is a nobrainer. A little extra polish (not Polish, that was fine :) ) would have made this a 5/5. Would have happily paid more than $0 for this!
