UFO: Aftershock

Patience needed...

I played this on Win7-64/Nvidia. The game is enjoyable in between the bugs, but there are so many that after finishing it I won't ever be replaying it. The following issues of developer shame were encountered: - Squad members sometimes get wrong name labels in tactical view. - Squad members sometimes turn invisible in tactical view. - Entering manufacturing after a mission results in interface filled with blank debug text. - Enemy unit mission objective sometimes would not spawn making mission unwinnable. - Game often hangs loading saves at 95% load completion. - Inventory interface weirdness/hangs using under-barrel plasma launcher. - Game-ending crash-to-desktop/squad disappeared that required re-playing from earlier saves to avoid. - Game hangs after playing ending cinematic. I usually use a save file pool of 10-ish saves, rotating and saving over earlier saves as the game progresses. This may have been what caused the game ending crash. I started not reusing saves afterwards and encountered no more crashes to desktop. Save often. Save numerous. Deeper plot with better gameplay than UFO: Aftermath. Good luck.

Shadowgrounds Survivor

Fun, quick, shooter

Another Frozenbyte game that's rough around the edges. The game's first sin is using an auto-save system that only saves progress between missions. Stopping mid-mission is not an option. This was mildly irritating until after the aptly named Canyon to Hell mission at which point the game started crashing when starting a mission. Frozenbyte's known of this unresolved issue since 2014 (see https://steamcommunity.com/app/11200/discussions/0/35220315897554295/) and has some workarounds on their FAQ (see http://board.frozenbyte.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=20058). Using method 2, I was able to complete the game. Otherwise, with an initial PhysX update, the game ran without issue.

Shadowgrounds

Weekend distraction

Game needs a bit more polish. I encountered the following issues on Win7-64: - Running game first time turns off Windows Aero and game hangs. Game process must be ended and rerun for game to load. - Game character sticks on edges/corners of walls, stuff, other characters. Easily results in character death if swamped by enemies. - Has auto-save system incompatible with realities of life - phone calls, power outages, computer crashes, nap time, meals, etc. If you need to stop in the middle of a mission you will be playing the mission over from beginning again. - Last two missions were buggy in that objects you had to interact with would not work again after a re-spawn resulting in starting the mission over. Not cool. - Widescreen resolutions are not offered by default game launcher. Editing Config\Options.txt and setting screen_height and screen_width to desired widescreen resolution seems to work. Game could be finished in a weekend if no issues are encountered. More enjoyable than not. Shooter fix on a budget.
