Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection Two

Fun, but vastly overrated.

I don't have any nostalgic memories of these games, so the title of this says it all. If you're like me, and don't have a history with playing these games, then just know that it's going to be a mixed bag. The glowing reviews you see here are mostly due to nostalgia. The Ultima series is far better in just about every regard. Might and Magic as well.

Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga

Think I'm too late to the party.

I didn't get to play this game back in the late 90's when it was released, just a demo actually but I've never been up on D&D rules. I ran through a quick let's play to familiarize myself with the rules and gameplay but I think I'm just too late to the party. I don't doubt this game is a classic, and it seems like it deserves all the accolades but...I don't know, just not for me. Aged really well though, I can say that.

Anachronox

Probably a Classic, but...

I played this game when it came out for about 10 minutes at a CompUSA(remember those?) and wanted it but kind of forgot about it. Saw it on here and gave it a buy. The charactesr, the story, all seem pretty awesome except there is one flaw to this game that I can't get past. The camera. I may be in the minority but I just can't play this game without getting a headache. I don't know what Ion Storm was thinking but this is horrific. This game came out after FF7, 8, and even 9 so I wish that it would have just taken a step from those games and just made the camera more fixed. It's the Starebears that did me in, to be honest.

Far Cry® 2: Fortune's Edition

I hate this game...

I loved the first Farcry. I remember playing that game back in college, me and my friends talking about how 'real' it looked...well, at least it DID. Unlike a lot of people I'm not one who is weary of sequels so I jumped right in...and landed on my head. The biggest problem with this game is that it's just meh. You just fight the same guys over and over. That would be cool if the combat was funner but it's not. For some reason I had this urge not to quit, to finish the entire game so I did and honestly there were times where I got so frustrated with the 'meh' that I found myself cussing this game out. A good note? It looks fantastic...that's about it. Story? Sucks. I write crappy reviews, I know, but they're not as bad as this game...trust me.

Fallout 2 Classic

I kinda liked F1 better...

Maybe because I've just finished these games for the first time, and back to back, but as great as this is there were some problems that I couldn't ignore. First the graphics were...well it looked and played just like Fallout 1. I don't know the history of this series or if there is any significant reason that is, but it does kind of make you feel like they just got lazy. Also there were a lot of places but you don't really have to visit them to finish the game. I played through my first time without even stepping foot in NCR. I still don't know why it's in the game. Also I got the Enclave Power Armor pretty early which kind of made the game unbalanced. Those complaints aside, I still thought this was a great game and had a fantastic time playing through it. Great purchase.

Outcast 1.1

FANTASTIC!

Wow, I just got done finishing this game and...yeah, A+ title. The fact that it's only 5.99 is an even bigger bonus. I had never heard of this game until seeing it here on GOG and after reading the reviews decided to take a chance on it. I had recently finished Mass Effect 1 before playing this and this really does STILL hold it's own today against the big name titles. I had just as much fun playing this as I did Mass Effect, and to be honest...the story in this is a little bit better. The characters (Cutter, Marion, various Talon) are incredibly well written and are bursting with personality. This game is the definition of a classic. I highly recommend it.

Stays With You

At 27 years of age, this year, I've finally played through Fallout 1 for the first time. I haven't played any of them in the series but being intrigued by Fallout 3 I decided to give the first one a shot since usually the older games in the series are often the better games in the series (please refer to Final Fantasy). I was blown away with how good this was. I heard the stories but that didn't prepare me fully for this game's epic goodness. It's simplistic, incredibly easy, and extremely short, but somehow it's one of the best RPG's I've ever played. Even after beating it I still found myself thinking about it. Reflecting back on the story and reading about various ways others have played through it. I'm going to be picking up Fallout 2 soon and hoping to have the same experience. I guess if I had to come up with a complaint it's that in the Citadel I had a hard time finding doors in the vault under it. The muck that covered the walls obstructed my view I guess and I spend a couple of frustrating hours trying to find out where to go. In the end though this really doesn't matter and maybe added to the accomplished feeling I got after beating it.
