With the -nofilter and -notruetype executable arguments this looks great, basically hi-res PS1 graphics. Controls work reasonably with an XBox controller. Unfortunately some of the sound effects have a distracting white-noise hiss that is apparently unfixable and is personally a deal-breaker for me.
Finally got around to playing this. The art direction and music is nice, the story is interesting, gameplay reminds me of Ground Control. Unfortunately there are some issues... 1. Despite significantly exceeding the required specs, the game loads slowly. Battletech had this problem too; is this a Unity issue? 2. Can't remap keys? Seriously!? 3. Can't save in skirmish mode?!? Hard pass.
Props to Rebellion for getting these old games back on a modern platform and making them look nice; I had no problem running the game. Unfortunately this is a case where nostalgia of playing this on the N64 did not live up to reality. Compared to the second game (also on GoG), the base building and unit command is primitive. It also doesn't have an obvious Instant Action mode that lets you play matches against the AI on different maps. My recommendation is if you're a fan of the second game, stick with that!
The story, music, and feel of this game is perfect. The gameplay is fast and satisfying. You die in one hit, but so do your opponents, and the game immediately restarts you at the previous checkpoint (with no perceptible load time) which keeps it from getting frustrating. My only complaint is that some of the puzzles took me awhile to figure out, but I think they are necessary as a respite between the combat levels. I have similar thoughts for the platforming segments which occasionally left me almost looking up a walkthrough. Overall worth playing, but watch some gameplay or grab the demo before buying if you're unsure because it's different from games you're probably used to.
